TIBURON CHALLENGER CHAMPION SAM QUERREY IGNITES WIMBLEDON
Sam Querrey, Tiburon Challenger 2014 Singles Champion played the match of a lifetime to upset Novak Djokovic in the third round of Wimbledon last week. Rain suspended the match after Sam took a two sets to love lead. Coming back the next day he managed to clinch the match in four sets 7-6 (6) 6-1 3-6 7-6 (5).
Sam has followed up that win with victory in the fourth round against Nicolas Mahut 6-4 7-6 (5) 6-4. Sam lost to Nicolas in the semi finals at Rosmalen earlier in June this year, also a grass court tournament, making this victory at Wimbledon that much sweeter.
Sam will now meet the winner of Goffin and Raonic in the quarter finals.
Good luck Sam!
Other previous Tiburon Challenger players making moves in the grass court season:
American Steve Johnson, previous Tiburon Challenger player just had his wonderful grass court run brought to a halt by the one and only Roger Federer in the fourth round at The All England Club. Johnson had a grass court tournament victory in Nottingham in the lead up to Wimbledon. Following that up with a fourth round appearance in 'The Championships' is a great effort and he well deserves his career high ranking of No.29 right now.
Denis Novikov qualified and won a round and Donald Young also made it to the second round before bowing out to Frenchman Pouille.
Australian Sam Groth, holder of the worlds fastest serve at 163mph and past Tiburon Challenger player, and partner Robert Lindstedt from Sweden are in the third round of the Wimbledon Doubles Championships.
Australian John Millman, 2014 Tiburon Challenger singles finalist losing to Sam Querrey, had a wonderful run at this year's Wimbledon Championships making it through to the third round before Andy Murray (GBR) world no.2 put an end to that.
Adil Shamasdin (Canada), 2014 Tiburon Challenger Doubles Champion and partner Jonathan Marray (Great Britain) have reached the quarter finals in the doubles draw beating Cuevas/Granollers (15th seeds) 14-12 in the fifth and final set.
Jack Sock (USA), Tiburon 2012 Challenger Singles Champion and partner Vasek Pospisil (Canada) seeded No. 8 are also through to the third round as are Rajeev Ram (USA) and Raven Klaasen (RSA) the eleveth seeds
Dustin Brown, the flamboyant German with flowing dreadlocks lost a five set battle with Nick Kygrios which lasted two days. Brown, made famous by his 2015 Wimbledon second round victory over Rafael Nadal also participated in the Tiburon Challenger last year but could not overcome the 15th seed Kyrgios, Australian up and comer at this year's Championship.
Denis Kudla (USA), 2016 Tiburon Challenger singles finalist had a tough go of it coming up short in the first round against Damir Dzumhur (BIH) 3 - 6 in the fifth set.
Congratulations to all the players and we are excited to welcome whoever makes it back to Tiburon this year for the 2016 Wells Fargo Tiburon Challenger!
