CAL V STANFORD: APRIL 3; 11 AM A few weeks ago a group of around 20 TPC members gathered at Stanford University to watch Cal vs Stanford Men in what turned out to be a barn burner of a match with Cal taking the victory. Now it's the Women's turn with Stanford traveling to Cal Berkeley on April 3rd to take on Cal in what is sure to be a performance to remember. TPC new hire, Zsofi Susanyi played for Cal Berkeley graduating last year and is rounding off her position as Assistant Coach for the women's team with the match against Stanford. Many of our TPC junior players have the skills and aspirations of playing collegiate tennis and watching tennis of this level is a priceless experience for them. The match start time is 11am. This sounds like a lot of fun to me, we hope to see you there! Please let me know if you will be attending by emailing brendanc@tiburonpc.org to give us the chance to organize a possible meet and greet for our TPC juniors players.
CAMPBELL JOHNSON CHECKING IN
 Hello Tiburon Peninsula Club members!
I am currently still in Colorado recovering from a minor shoulder surgery. While here I wanted to reach out and talk tennis with all of you. As you probably know, the Indian Wells ATP tournament is underway with some awesome tennis ahead. I wanted to talk to everyone about the benefits of simply watching tennis and how it can help your game.
What I would like to encourage all of you to do is pick something to focus on while you're watching. For example:
- Contact point
- Footwork
- Momentum into court (on their back foot or front foot when hitting?)
- Split Step
- Recovery
- What balls do the pros tend to approach the net on?
- Point patterns
These are just some examples to use. You can also ask your coach at TPC what you should pay attention to when watching tennis that best suits your game. The beauty of watching tennis is that you can focus on whatever you would like or whatever you think you need to learn. If your backhand is bothering you, pay attention to the small details that these pros execute.
After a long day at work or running the kids around town to different activities, I encourage all of you to all sit down and watch the Indian Wells ATP event for 10, 20 minutes or more. I guarantee it will make a difference. My hope is that watching some of the best players in the world will inspire you to try new things on the courts as well as further your tennis education. Be a student of the game!
Look out for Tiburon Peninsula Challenger participants:
- Mackie McDonald TPC Challenger Semifinalist & UCLA Bruin was awarded a main draw wild card.
- Tim Smycek TPC Challenger Champion - main draw.
- Denis Kudla TPC Challenger Finalist - main draw.
- Young American prodigy's Taylor Fritz and Francis Tiafoe (TPC Challenger Participant) will face off in the first round.
Thanks so much for your time. I miss all the awesome tennis families at TPC and I'm counting down the days till I can get back on the court with all of you!
I also wanted to let you know how excited I am to hear about the Junior League matches that started last week. As coaches here at TPC we thought long and hard about pushing this team-based philosophy and it's awesome to see it coming alive. Building this team environment is going to be a huge stepping stone for our juniors in many different ways. Being that tennis is an individual sport, knowing that they are a part of a team with their friends counting on them will allow for an easy transition from another sport. Because kids respond so much to the social interactions that team sports bring, I believe this will really light a fire under the TPC Junior development program. This league play and match play oriented philosophy will help our all of our kids enter into the USTA individual tournaments. It's really exciting to see our juniors wear the TPC colors, compete, and cheer each other on against other clubs.
TPC JUNIOR TEAM TENNIS UPDATE
The Tiburon Peninsula Club Junior Program has taken the next step towards making our tennis program the best in Northern California. Our junior players are now part of a program that has a team-based philosophy. It includes multiple weekly practices, ladder challenge matches, intra - club matches, inter- club matches and USTA tournaments. We have a professional staff that is totally supportive in making our program the best it can be, working very long hours on court providing private and group lessons and running the practices. Tennis Director, Brendan Curry is spending countless hours on and off the court working to make this new philosophy a reality, with the full support of the Tennis Committee and our Club staff led by our General Manager, Jerry Pang.
Now it is up to the tennis families of TPC to also be fully engaged in the future of our Junior Tennis Program. Please look for an upcoming informative email outlining the 2016 program and schedule for this spring and through the summer.
This is a very exciting time to be part of our TPC Junior Tennis Program!
Michael Friedman, Junior Coordinator
LUC POULIN AND NOVAK DJOKOVIC
TPC junior player had the experience of a lifetime getting World No.1 Novak Djokovic's autograph at Indian Wells last week after his 7/6 7/6 victory over Tsonga.
Awesome Luc , we're happy for you. Perhaps one day you'll be playing on that very court.
