TENNIS
LEAGUE RESULTS
8.0 mixed team results
Our six players yesterday arrived in top form and we had great tennis on all three courts on a beautiful afternoon at TPC.
Courtney Boscoe and Kim Winterhalter were a dynamic duo and after losing the first game, they cruised to a 6-2 first set win. The second set was much closer with excellent shotmaking by all four players. Everyone held serve which meant we were serving at 3-4 and that's when Courtney and Kim decided to take it up a notch, winning the last three games and the match.
Bruce Price and Sue Terrell (playing together for the first time in Sue's first ever Mixed USTA match!) faced a smart, talented team and viewers could be excused for getting dizzy from so much topspin. Both Bruce and Sue had to stay focused throughout because on the other side of the net, Jim was scrambling to get everything back and often hitting winners off deep topspin shots. Sue did her dance at the net, earning many points that way and after splitting sets, a full third set was played to determine the winner. And just like on court 1, TPC served at 3-4 and then took the next three games, breaking Jim's serve for the first time along the way. Sue's family had strict instructions not to be seen or heard (due to first match nerves!) but they managed to find a decent viewing spot and catch some of the action too.
We came oh-so-close to winning all three lines because Irene Denebaum and Steve also played extremely well throughout their match, providing spectators with some dazzling displays, good footwork and excellent placement. They took the first set 7-6, barely lost the second 7-5 and then fought hard in the super tie. The match could not have been closer. A big thank you to all players and to Leigh Pagan and Heather Lobdell for joining me to cheer them on. Thanks to Grover Wilson also for stopping by and for having been willing to step in last minute if necessary.
