October 2015  Faculty News & Training

To kick-off our 2015 Salute to Faculty Excellence Week, brave UNT faculty members presented Pecha Kucha sessions on the theme "The Secret Lives of Faculty".  Pecha Kucha is Japanese for "chit-chat" and describes a presentation format using 20 slides which advance automatically in 20 second intervals.

INFORMATION ON CLEAR INITIATIVES
official pp artworkThank A Teacher

Outstanding teachers at UNT do make a difference for students.  They make learning challenging and fun; they are available when needed; and they weather many storms with students to foster bright futures.  When teachers have made this kind of a difference, many students wish for a way to say "Thanks".

UNT students have the opportunity to say "Thanks" to their instructors through the "Thank a Teacher" Program here at UNT.  The program is open year round, but to ensure that their instructor receives their thanks during Fall 2015, students have until December 10th to submit the form at http://thanks.unt.edu.

Students may complete as many of these forms as they wish (one for each teacher they wish to thank).  They may also choose to remain anonymous.  Their notes will be sent to their teachers as part of a letter of recognition from the Provost once final grades have been submitted for the semester!

Should students ask you about the Thank A Teacher program, please be aware that the program deadline for submission to their teachers this semester is December 10th.

Any questions regarding Thank A Teacher should be sent to Nancy.Fire@unt.edu.

Illuminate Good Ideas

CLEAR supports the SGA initiative known as the Illuminate Good Ideas campaign, with the intent of identifying then prioritizing good ideas for improving teaching and learning experiences at UNT.  President Smatresk has provided funding to pilot this initiative.  CLEAR is the administrative home, but the committee is led by students (2 undergraduates and 2 graduates).  Drs. Kimi King and Lee Hughes are serving as faculty representatives and Patrick Pluscht serves as the staff representative from Academic Affairs.  The ideation campaign launched April 1st and ideas are being submitted, commented on, and voted up or down.  We encourage you to login and review the ideas and comments.

CLEAR Initiative:  Learning Catalytics --
Engaging and Interacting

CLEAR is working with Pearson as part of our ongoing exploration of increased student engagement.  We are partners with faculty in Biology, Anthropology, BCIS, Political Science and Math to test a classroom engagement tool called Learning Catalytics (https://learningcatalytics.com/). This tool allows faculty and students to interact in a variety of ways using student devices such as smartphones, tablets and laptops.  Participating faculty with the help of CLEAR and Pearson, will develop scenarios and implement the tool in a variety of class sizes and settings.

Teaching Resources for Engaged Educators (TREE)

Want to maximize your impact on student learning?  Do you look for ways to connect with other committed educators?  Are you looking for ways to document your efforts to improve your teaching?  If so, the Teaching Resources for Engaged Educators (TREE) initiative, developed by CLEAR, is for you.  TREE leverages online training modules focused on 10 important teaching proficiencies (e.g., engaged learning, assessment, course design) that allow you to move at your own pace through three levels of proficiency (introductory, intermediate, and advanced). The TREE program will appear in your list of Blackboard courses and is available for everyone who teaches at UNT.  To participate, simply select the course and then the modules you would like to complete.  You will receive badges for completing each module and a Certificate of Teaching Distinction when successfully completing all three levels of a proficiency.  For more information, please refer to the CLEAR website:  http: clear.unt.edu/tree.
