Just before the winter break we had our first (and hopefully only) snow day of the year.  Luckily it was just after our charter renewal public hearing and before our trip to Albany for Advocacy Day (see below).  We had to scramble to reschedule some HS regents, but we are now officially in the second half of the school year......and as busy as ever. While you enjoy the winter break, catch up on the news at Renaissance!

SOUPerbowl & Superbowl Champs

6th Grader Luis was the winner of the Superbowl T-Shirt Contest hosted by our Food Service providers Geoff & Debbie Ramsey.  Lunch that day featured barbequed wings, of course!

The 2nd Annual SOUPerbowl Contest again collected non-perishable
s for the food pantry ministry of Bethany and St. Jacobus Churches in Woodside.  The food drive was very successful.  As Pastor Joseph Mantovani wrote to SOUPerbowl organizer Amanda and the middle school student council: "On Saturday the 7th we had our busiest day ever with the most volunteers and the most people coming in for food assistance. We distributed everything from the food drive and over 500 dollars worth of food from our grant.  Young and caring people from two different churches,  Bayside High School and Renaissance all worked together to make a difference to many hungry families. Thank you again for your help and support with this project."

Congratulations go out to the Seahawks of Renaissance: Kindergarten, 2nd grade, 4th grade, 6th grade, 8th grade, 10th grade, and 12th grade. This team won the SOUPerbowl contest with 452 points to 329 points.

Advocacy Day 2015

A group of approximately 40 students, parents, teachers and staff from Renaissance traveled up to Albany for Advocacy Day.  They attended a rally with over 1,400 other charter school advocates, visited Senator Peralta's office and spoke briefly with Assemblyman Moya (pictured above left), who stepped out of chambers to say hello.
1st Grade Update
First grade teacher Flo gave us this update:

Fireman Tom
Flo's daughter Hannah was a
guest reader

"This month we had a glorious time at the FDNY Fire Zone. What a great trip! We learned all about fire safety and heard some neat phrases to help us remember important rules about fires,  "stay low and go", "don't hide, go outside". Fireman Tom taught us to make an escape plan with our family so we are well prepared in case anything should happen. At the end of the presentation we were all able to crawl outside as fake smoke filled the hallway. It was such a fun day!

The children are hard at work creating non-fiction stories. They have been working on writing introductions and creating chapters for each new idea in their book. The primary focus during this unit is to, teach the reader. The first grade is just filled with authors who want to share their ideas and knowledge with as many people as possible. Please be sure to mark your calendars for our next Publishing Party which will take place on, Friday, February 27th. I hope to be able to begin the party right at 8:30 so all parents can attend before the start of the work day."
Amp Up NYC:Little Kids Rock
Recently Renaissance received a supply of new modern band instruments, including electric guitars, as well as curriculum and professional development.  This will give Renaissance students more opportunities to learn about music, to play instruments and to be part of a school band.
Check out the website to learn more about the program.  Thank you Little Kids Rock and Berklee College of Music and music teacher Everett Boyd for bringing this opportunity to Renaissance!
Featured Article - Renaissance High School Unwrapped!
On March 4th Renaissance will host an informational night specifically for 6th, 7th and 8th grade students and their families.  Do you know about all the AP courses available, as well as the College Now program, which earns students college credits?  If not, this is an opportunity to get an overview of the high school's programming, meet high school staff, and have a chance to talk with students and alumni about what makes Renaissance the right choice for High School. We hope everyone can join us!

What's On Your Mind?

thought bubble
Recently high school science teacher and Botball Club director Richard Doherty wrote a paper on Programming vs. Coding.  If you, and/or your child, are interested in this topic, you will find his thoughts very enlightening.  Read the paper here.
