Red Horse Squadron Activates at Beale Air Force Base

Jobs Come with New Engineering Unit

Red Horse Statue

An official ceremony celebrating the incoming 583rd Red Horse Squadron was held at Beale Air Force Base in March. The downsizing of the 940th Civil Engineer Squadron by 100 members coincides with the incoming Red Horse unit which will absorb most of the jobs downsized by the 940th.

The base selection process for the Red Horse Squadron began in 2005. Due to available land, construction material and skilled labor, Beale Air Force Base was chosen as the mission's location.

The 583rd brings nearly 200 jobs focused on engineering, logistics, security forces, support personnel, and a medical team. The Red Horse unit represents a growth opportunity in manpower and resources for an extremely mobile force involving field response and special Air Force operations.

The new engineering unit will be equipped and trained to tackle large construction projects in hostile and high-threat environments. As an added bonus, Red Horse combines engineering skills with military precision and will be available to provide assistance in local disaster scenarios including earthquakes, floods and tornadoes. The unit is capable of moving rubble and shoring up or repairing levees.

Walk Identifies Wheatland Business Needs and Successes

Six teams of community leaders coordinated by the Yuba-Sutter Business Consortium visited 32 businesses in Wheatland to receive feedback and offer assistance for concerns and needs May 9. Teams also visited Live Oak businesses on the same day. Approximately 13 Wheatland businesses reported an increase in sales or productivity, about 10 businesses stated that their sales had declined, and the rest of the businesses said economic conditions have remained the same since last year.

Half of the businesses polled said they enjoyed Wheatland's residents, small-town atmosphere and community, another 18% reported that family and friends were nearby. Nearly 50% believe their business could be more successful if signage options were improved, taxes, fees and infrastructure costs reduced and there were more affordable and effective advertising methods.

Business Walks are coordinated every six months to different communities within the Yuba-Sutter Region. Three walks have been held since May 2012.

Caltrans Begins Major Road Overlay Work

$48 Million Street Overlay Slated for Routes 20/70

At the same time the biggest state route overlay project in Marysville history started in June at the most challenging location, the intersection of state routes 70 and 20 in downtown Marysville. The $48 million project includes rebuilding major segments of State Highways 70 and 20 with continuously reinforced concrete designed to last up to four decades, asphalt repaving, upgraded drainage systems, updated traffic signals, new landscaping, streetlights and improved sidewalks, curb ramps and driveways. Roadside message boards will post the latest information.

Teichert Construction was awarded the contract and will operate around the clock, with the exception of the Marysville Peach Festival in July, until the construction season ends in October. The project is anticipated to be completed in 2014.

Additional developments in Yuba County include Rideout Regional Medical Center which is two years into a $225 million construction project to build a medical tower and modernize it's facility. Yuba College is spending $12 million of bond funding in renovating a Learning Resource Center on its Linda campus.

Yuba County 2013 Economic Profile

New Yuba-Sutter Tourism Guides Available Economic Profile Cover, 2013

The newly published Economic Development Profile reveals that a 17.4% population increase and 22.6% housing stock increase has occurred in Yuba County since 2000. Pie charts, bar charts and a map graphically illustrate where new residential and job-based increases are anticipated for future growth, and a spreadsheet shows retail sales taxes escaping to other areas due to a lack of local retail stores and commercial services in an amount exceeding $500 million.

Two updated pocket tourism guides tout the destination opportunities offered within Yuba County and the Yuba-Sutter Region. The Recreation Guide provides a calendar of fairs, festivals and sporting events, and the Restaurant/Hotel Guide promotes the area's hospitality and food service outlets. Both tourism guides contain easy-to-read map grids and contact information to help out of town guests and visitors.

The tourism guides are available at local motels, city and county counters, and the offices of the Yuba-Sutter Chamber of Commerce, Yuba-Sutter Economic Development Corporation, and Yuba-Sutter Fairgrounds. The guides are also distributed at the Sleep Train Amphitheatre during concert events.

The Yuba County Economic Development Profile can be picked up at the Yuba County Government Center in lobby kiosks throughout the building and can also be viewed online from the homepage of the Yuba County economic development website.

Baseball Movie Shooting in Downtown Marysville

Action Sequences Feature Appeal-Democrat Stadium

Mendoza Line
The Mendoza Line Films in Marysville

In 1979 the "The Mendoza Line" became an ESPN sports punch line for professional baseball player Mario Mendoza and his mediocre batting average of .200.

Prospect Films is shooting a comedic baseball film entitled The Mendoza Line at various locations around Marysville in June. The production tells the story of minor league player Ricardo Perez, a low-round draft pick struggling through his third year in the minor leagues and who is trying to get to a professional baseball career. At the same time Perez lives in fear that he and his wife will be discovered as undocumented residents.

Film actors include Ricardo Perez, Phil Pichette and Gino Montoya. Players for the Marysville Gold Sox will be seen in the movie, and much of the baseball action sequences are being filmed in Appeal-Democrat Stadium. The film is anticipated to be released in Spring 2014.
