I hope our April Newsletter finds you enjoying the spring sports season and our beautiful Florida weather.
  
We have been hard at work in the JSMP office preparing some special programming for our members, friends and supporters.  This newsletter below highlights just a few items of interest that we are excited to share.  
2013 First Coast Sports Injury Symposium

Registration is now open for the First Coast Sports Injury Symposium to be held Saturday June 1st at the Adam Herbert University Center at the University of North Florida.

 

Registration is limited.  Register EARLY! 

 

Final Program

 

This year's program will feature the Lower Extremity & Concussion Update.  We are proud to announce our faculty for this program will include some outstanding speakers including: Jeffrey Guy, MD Head Team Physician for the University of South Carolina, David Caldwell, Tom Myslinski, & Rod Scott of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Steven Lucie, MD, Kevin Murphy, MD, Jerry Stevens, ATC, Paul Zawatsky, MD, and FHSAA Executive Director, Roger Dearing.  The program will include a dedicated, small group, hands-on, breakout session with at least 15 of our areas finest orthopedic surgeons. For program and registration information go to JSMP.US or CLICK HERE

National Athletic Training Month Social bowls a STRIKE!

Nearly 35 Athletic Trainers, students & friends enjoyed an evening of celebration on March 13th at Latitude 30 for National Athletic Trainers Month.  Jerry Stevens, ATC presented a lecture on Governmental Affairs and it's impact upon our profession. 

  
JSMP Awarded grant for Sports Related Concussion
  

 

The Jacksonville Sports Medicine Program (JSMP) has been awarded a grant of $25,000 for a Concussion Program for area athletes and youth sports.  The grant was made possible by the Baptist Community Health, Lynn Sherman, Director Community Health for Baptist Health states "the safety of our community children participating in athletic activities is of paramount importance."  "We are excited to partner with the JSMP to provide this service."JSMP check

 

This was awarded and presented during the JSMP Annual National Athletic Trainers Month Social and Educational Lecture Series hosted at Latitude 30 on March 13th by Community Health Board Member Mel Gotlieb.

 

Robert Sefcik, Executive Director of the Jacksonville Sports Medicine Program remarked about the award......"this gift will provide us the ability to offer this specialized baseline test to our area school athletes and also make available this tool to our local physicians should a head injury occur to an athlete of the Duval County Public Schools."

  
 
Athletic Trainer's Participate in Sports Safety Advocacy

Recently Bob Sefcik attended the National Youth Safety Alliance in Washington, DC to proclaim and promote the Secondary School Athlete's Bill of Rights. Jim Mackie & Jerry Stevens attended the NATA Capitol Hill Day to promote HR 72 a joint resolution promoting the Secondary School Athlete's Bill of Rights as it had just been introduced into Congress.  This measure has received huge national media attention and has elevated our profession in the eyes of Congress and the general public as the experts in caring for athletes and the active population.

Bob & Jim recently, along with others participated in educating a number of members of the Florida Legislature regarding Athletic Training and it's varying venues and impact upon the public and their safety. 

 

 Educational Lecture Series: New Time-New Format in May

Join us Friday May 17th at St. Vincent's Southside Campus for Educational Lecture Series featuring Dr. Kevin Murphy and a soon to be announced topic.  Our new time for this event is 7:00 am - 8:00 am, a continental breakfast will be served.
