Good news!

The Town Council appoints the Library Board of Trustees. The volunteer board consists of seven members who meet monthly on the first Wednesday of each month. Each board member serves a three year term. The Board is responsible for hiring the Director, setting policies, advocating for full services and securing operating funds.

This is an exciting time to become involved with a new library building set to open in the spring providing new opportunities for library services to the community.

Consider a new program from Amazon. They donate .5% of the purchase price
to charitable organizations like Friends.
Customers when shopping can select a charity and Amazon will forward the donation to the designated charity.

The Friends received a notice because customers have already selected us to support. Amazon will send any money due us quarterly. There is no cost to us or to shoppers.
So if you are trapped in the house and passing the time with some on-line shopping, check out the
Amazon Smile program. Details, click here.

Tiverton Library Staff News

  • Geek the Library--
    This awareness campaign
introduces the word 'geek' as a verb
and illustrates the fact that everyone is passionate about something
    --everyone 'geeks' something--
and that the public library supports it all. [That's why Dewey was so important!]

What do YOU geek?

  • Congratulations to Office Assistant, Pam Poli [above], for winning this year's coveted Golden Sneaker Award at the Friends Annual Meeting.

With a shared workspace, and a warm smile, Pam took on additional tech pieces as needed to keep the library webpage and public information current. Thanks Pam for going the extra mile!

  • Thank you to Prue Fallon who took her love of travel to India this year.

After developing her own funding support, Prue traveled as a People to People Ambassador.

Between November 2 and 11, 2014, eight delegates from People to People Ambassadors visited the Golden Triangle in India: New Delhi, Jaipur, and Agra.

This exciting trip included visits to the key cultural sites in the areas, and visits to local libraries by the professional librarians.

Details, click here.

The primary purpose of this trip was to increase cultural and professional awareness on a journey to understand different types of library services in India. Professional meetings and library visits focused on

how successful programs serve all library users, including minority populations;

the challenges and issues facing all types of Indian libraries; and

the opportunity to create future partnerships with Indian libraries

The Taj Mahal [Urdu above] was one of the cultural sites visited.

It was built by a Muslim Mughal emperor, Shahjehan, in Agra [Uttar Pradesh] India, as a tomb and memorial

to his favorite wife, Arjumand Bano Begum, Mumtaz Mahal, who died at the birth of their 14th child.

Completed in 1653 after 22 years, the structure is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World and is

a UNESCO World Heritage site, combining Persian, Islamic, and Indian architectural styles.

It has been described as a love poem in marble,

a teardrop on the cheek of time.

The Taj is a reminder for all mankind that the universally accepted but not so well practiced concept of 'Love & Peace',

the essence of the paradise, free from conflicts of races and geographical boundaries

is important to be observed solemnly.

Union Public Library Association

The Union facility is maintained by The Union Public Library Association, a 501C3 organization, and all needed repairs and maintenance are funded by the association's

annual book sale held in August.

New association members are always welcome, as are new volunteer library assistants.

Contact President Gayle Lawrence through the Library for information.

COMMUNITY CONNECTION

One in three people in the U.S. do not have home access to the internet.

In Tiverton many still have dial-up access.

The new library will give them access to high speed internet to fill out job applications, view town council sessions, budget hearings, school committee meetings, do homework, check healthcare resources, provide space for police training workshops, economic development meetings,

and more.

See how libraries are changing the way we connect.

New Library Update

March 2, 2015

With the exterior of the new library complete,
the final interior work has continued in spite of the harsh and snowy winter. Some areas are finished, and there is only finish carpentry left in the others, followed by the flooring.
Substantial completion will be achieved this month, and the furniture and equipment will be delivered in early April.
The final landscape work will be completed as soon as the weather permits.

For the construction folks: click Behan Brothers and for a video, click on the aerial view at Joe Arruda Construction. Thanks to both, and to the architects at Union Studios, who gave flesh to a dream!

Solarize Little Compton and Solarize Tiverton are unique discount buying programs that use a tiered-pricing structure, town-supported education and outreach and one competitively selected installer to dramatically reduce the cost of solar. The more residents sign up for Solarize, the more the cost comes down. The program ends May 8, 2015.

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH Commerce RI and the R.I. Office of Energy Resources, SmartPower is launching the next pilot program to develop small-scale solar power in Rhode Island. Tiverton and Little Compton officially joined the program.

"As a practical matter, everything we can do to alleviate the need for constructing additional energy transmission assets is a worthwhile step to stabilize the overall cost of living for our residents over the long term," Town Administrator, Matt Wojcik said.
