Death Cafe
Friday, September 30, 5 p.m.
Reuter Center Atrium

"Death Café" is an engaging gathering, a storytelling experience and a conversation about a subject that too often alienates those in our death phobic culture. A new movement, a shift, is at play in recovering the ritual of being with death through personal storytelling of fears, loss and death. By holding these conversations we hope to build a culture of dying wisely.

Join us at our next Death Cafe facilitated  by Thirdmessenger's Karen Sanders, Greg Lathrop and Sa'id Osio.

Dear OLLI Members,
Today, as we remember the 3,000 people who died 15 years ago in 9/11 attacks, we hope that you will join us at the Reuter Center at 2:30 p.m. (please note the new time) for a performance by Barbara Bates Smith and Jeff Sebens for a performance of "Go, Granny D." Smith and Sebens will bring to life the story of a resilient woman who, instead of being overwhelmed by the many challenges of our world, began a 3,200 mile walk to call attention to the need for campaign finance reform. This is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy this performance in an intimate setting.

We are proud that our members enact Granny D's resilient spirit every day by being so engaged in making a difference in our community.  We invite you to join others in a couple of opportunities to contribute. This Thursday, September 15, you can offer feedback to UNC Asheville students who have ideas for social entrepreneurial enterprises, in a session titled "Ideas to Action."  On Monday, September 19, you can learn more about being a volunteer in area K-12 schools in opportunities arranged by OLLI's Civic Engagement Committee. And please take time to read Judy LaMee's story on one of our dedicated, valuable volunteers Jacob Cohen, who makes a difference at OLLI and throughout Asheville by sharing his considerable talents.

Next Friday will be a day that reflects the diversity of OLLI's offerings.  In the morning we will welcome new members to our growing organization.  The Council on Aging of Buncombe County and representatives from the Social Security Administration will offer practical information about Medicare. You may attend the meeting of The Forum, one of our many special interest groups.  You may learn more about music in our community by attending Dr. Melodie Galloway's "Inside the Music" and hearing about performances by the Asheville Choral Society. And of course, we are happy to host "Symphony Talk" with Daniel Meyer and Chip Kaufmann where participants may hear about the symphony's season opening performance titled "Tchasing Tschaikovsy" featuring violin soloist Jennifer Koh.

With gratitude for the many people, staff and volunteers, who make this rich and varied programming possible,
Catherine Frank
Executive Director

TODAY
Storytelling Event: Go, Granny D!
Sunday, September 11, 2:30 p.m.
(please note new time)
Reuter Center's Manheimer Room

Never underestimate grannies.  At age 90 Doris "Granny D" Haddock blazed a 3200-mile trail across the U.S. to campaign for finance reform, precipitating the passage of the McCain-Feingold Act. She continued her bipartisan  efforts in countrywide voter registration drives, issuing her final challenge in 2010 at age 100: "Democracy is a running game. You huddle and you go back in. You keep going."

Off-Broadway actress Barbara Bates Smith, accompanied by musician Jeff Sebens, highlights the story of this crusader whose determination took the world by surprise and elevated her to national fame. Smith summons the granny with the straw hat proclaiming across the U.S. "Corporations are not people! Democracy is!"

This performance event is free and open to the public.

For Jacob Cohen, It All Starts with the ABCs
with Judy LaMée

Jacob Cohen doesn't mind if you call him a word nerd. In fact, he wears his Triple Nerd Score T-shirt with pride.

Twice weekly, he plays with the Asheville Scrabble Club. He's good, really good. For the club he created a website and keeps statistics for all the games: the player with the highest scoring words, what those words are, word possibilities from a given set of seven letters. When Jacob says he's not a competitive person, it's a temptation to respond, "Really?"
