Death Cafe
Friday, September 30, 5 p.m.
Reuter Center Atrium

"Death Café" is an engaging gathering, a storytelling experience and a conversation about a subject that too often alienates one in our death phobic culture. A new movement, a shift, is at play in recovering the ritual of being with death through personal storytelling of fears, loss and death. By holding these conversations we hope to build a culture of dying wisely.

Join us at our next Death Cafe facilitated  by Thirdmessenger's Karen Sanders, Greg Lathrop and Sa'id Osio.

Buncombe County Early College (BCEC) students
want to hear from you!

This fall, BCEC will host a monthly Brown Bag Speaker to engage our students about the personal and professional experience that got people where they are today. These can include words of wisdom, learned lessons, funny stories, regrets, and those "life lessons" that keep us striving to do what we do.
Our students need to hear from community members who linked cause and effect (perhaps in hindsight) throughout their lives as our students continue to build their future paths, whether it be college majors, career pursuits, and/or personal endeavors.

The time commitment will be 40 minutes from 11:50 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., of which 25 minutes will be for your speaking, Power Point, or other type of presentation which best captures you and your story. Specific details will be shared with you regarding parking, etc., upon confirmation.
Brown Bag dates: Thursdays - (available dates) Oct. 6th , Nov. 3rd, Dec. 1st, Jan. 5th, March 2nd, April 6th, and May 4th

Our organization runs on volunteer effort and energy. We are always impressed by the willingness of our members to "give back." In this week's newsletter, in addition to reading about the many lectures and performances on offer, you may read about some unique opportunities to help younger people.  The Civic Engagement Committee is hosting returning volunteers on Thursday, September 8, and inviting new volunteers on Monday, September 19 to learn more about volunteering in Asheville City Schools.

On Thursday, September 15, you can hear from UNC Asheville students who have ideas for new businesses.  They need and want your feedback to improve their ideas and their "pitches." Asheville/Buncombe Early College is looking for people to share their life stories as they figure out their own life choices.

Speaking of people who have made a difference, please mark your calendar for Sunday, September 11, 2:30 p.m. to attend Barbara Bates Smith's performance of "Go, Granny D" about Doris Haddock, who walked across the country to call attention to the need for campaign finance reform. This is a rare opportunity to attend a performance of this caliber at no cost, so we urge you to attend.

Storytelling Event: Go, Granny D!
Sunday, September 11, 2:30 p.m.
(please note new time)
Reuter Center's Manheimer Room

Never underestimate grannies.  At age 90 Doris "Granny D" Haddock blazed a 3200-mile trail across the U.S.  for campaign finance reform, precipitating the passage of the McCain-Feingold Act. She continued her bipartisan  efforts in countrywide voter registration drives, issuing her final challenge in 2010 at age 100: "Democracy is a running game. You huddle and you go back in. You keep going."

Off-Broadway actress Barbara Bates Smith, accompanied by musician Jeff Sebens, highlights the story of this crusader whose steel determination took the world by surprise and elevated her to national fame. Smith summons the granny with the straw hat proclaiming across the U.S. "Corporations are not people! Democracy is!"

This performance event is free and open to the public.
