Dear OLLI Members,
We begin with some reminders and catching up. First, please note that our lost and found drawer is very full, so we will clean it out this Friday, July 22. If you think you may have lost anything, please come by the office this week.
Note that our Fall 2016 catalog will be available online and in the office on Friday, August 5. Our Allocation Registration for Fall 2016 College for Seniors courses will run August 10 -18. We will send a notice when our 2016-17 Annual Membership opens. We expect 2016-17 parking decals to be available some time in the first week in August, and we will send a notice when they are available.
Next, we want to welcome our new steering council leaders, affirmed through a survey back in April. Catherine Jordan will be our chair this year, Kirk Borland our chair elect, Patrick Chitwood our incoming chair, and Kathleen Mainardi our secretary. These hard working leaders make sure that our membership stays up to date with the many challenges and opportunities of our organization and provide direction and insight into all of our initiatives. We want to thank Judy LaMee for her three years of leadership on the steering council and look forward to her continuing work on the marketing committee. Thanks also to Jacob Cohen for his meticulous work as secretary and his ongoing work helping us with special projects. OLLI welcomes the help, expertise and leadership of our members. Please contact me (cfrank@unca.edu) if you would like to learn more about OLLI leadership or would like to contribute to ongoing efforts or initiate new ones.
Finally, we want to thank everyone who braved the stormy weather to attend our summer member social on Friday, July 15. We were grateful to see so many happy faces, longtime and new members, gathered to celebrate our community of teachers and learners. Our national and local communities have faced many difficulties this year, and we anticipate that this election season will provide continuing challenges and opportunities. Our strongest values at OLLI are learning and community. We hope that by continuing to learn, we continue to stand in each other's shoes and look at the world with each other's eyes, that we can face uncomfortable truths and find hope, strength, and wisdom in the many perspectives our instructors, members, and guests introduce. We know we would benefit from having more diverse perspectives in our organization, and we are grateful to all of our members who help us in that effort.
With gratitude for the many people who contribute to OLLI's success,
Catherine Frank
Executive Director

Meditation
Special Interest Group (SIG) Meeting
Monday, July 25, 4:15 p.m.,
Reuter Center, Room 120
We will be showing the documentary Scared Sacred by the award winning film director Velcro Ripper. In this film Mr. Ripper describes a breathing meditation he learned in a monastery, one of the first stops on his unique pilgrimage. We will practice this transformative breathing meditation during the program. The film has been described as follows:
"In a world teetering on the edge of self-destruction, award-winning filmmaker Velcro Ripper sets out on a unique pilgrimage. Visiting the 'Ground Zeros' of the planet, he asks if it is possible to find hope in the darkest moments of human history.
"Ripper travels to the minefields of Cambodia; war-torn Afghanistan; the toxic wasteland of Bhopal; post-9/11 New York; Bosnia; Hiroshima; Israel and Palestine. This powerful documentary captures his five-year odyssey to discover if humanity can transform the 'scared' into the
'sacred. In each place, he unearths unforgettable stories of survival, ritual, resilience and recovery.
"Scared Sacred deftly weaves together stunning footage with haunting memories, inspirational stories and an evocative soundscape. Featuring an engaging, first-person narrative, this film is an exquisite portrait of a search for meaning in times of turmoil, a luminous gift to a world in shadows."

and dreams! This two-hour workshop will be led by global artist Suzanne Benton. Take charge of your life with self-created symbols and stories in this process oriented workshop of personal focus and transformation. You will experience techniques that will help you to define and deepen your hopes and dreams for the future . Your box will then take on a unique form. Symbolic objects touch the root of consciousness and are traditionally preserved and revered. In this spirit we seal our boxes at the close of the workshop. They remain closed until the date you choose to open them. In the interim the box and its hidden messages become gentle reminders of our cherished values. A supply list of what to bring will be sent to participants.
