The Autumn Players will perform this work by Gary Carden, with music by Joe Penland, which tells the story of Horace Kephart's troubled and complex relationship with his Southern Highland neighbors and with his own demons.   Tickets at the door: $6 
 "Lee Smith Patchwork" Sunday, August 7,  2 p.m. 
Written and acted by Barbara Bates Smith and based on characters from Lee Smith's stories,this will be the premiere of Barbara's newest monodrama.

 The Workshop Committee at OLLI is exploring new horizons. We are seeking new members to host and market existing workshops
  scheduled through the Fall of 2016 and to find unique ways to serve as we develop new ways of working together. 
 "The mission of the OLLI Workshop Committee is to serve as a gateway to OLLI for a diverse cross-section of people by facilitating short-term, hands-on, unique and intensive learning experiences that appeal to members of the center and the greater community."

 We know you will enjoy this month's Opera Talk, Friday, July 8, 3 p.m. in the Reuter Center's Manheimer Room, which will include performances of highlights from the Asheville Lyric Opera's July 15-17 production of "Man of La Mancha." Don't miss this opportunity to hear world-class performances right here at the Reuter Center.

 Do you have a story to tell? Find out more about the Open Mic night on Wednesday, July 13, 7-9 p.m. If you don't want the spotlight, please come out to support this storytelling event. 
 Finally, mark your calendars for our remaining "Afternoons in Appalachia." On Sunday, July 31, 2 p.m. The Autumn Players' will perform "Outlanders," a play by Gary Carden about the life of Horace Kephart. There is a $6 charge for this performance. On Sunday, August 7, you may enjoy the premiere of Barbara Bates Smith's "Lee Smith Patchwork," based on a variety of stories by North Carolina author Lee Smith.  These performances will be held in the Manheimer Room in the Reuter Center. We had a great turnout for Barbara Bates Smith's performance of "Ivy Rowe" on June 19 and hope that our members will support all of these performances.

Summer Opera Cast  Performance Highlights Friday, July 8, 3 p.m. Manheimer Room, Reuter Center 
At the next Opera Talk, Asheville Lyric Opera (ALO) and the cast of the ALO production of "Man of La Mancha" will present a concert of highlights from the show.  This free concert will give you a chance to see talented cast members in action including renowned Metropolitan Opera star David Malis, the amazing triple-threat Donata Cucinotta, and the brilliant Scott Wichael. ALO will perform "Man of La Mancha" July 15, 16, and 17 at the Diana Wortham Theatre. 
Asheville Lyric Opera (ALO) brings great stories and music to life on Asheville's premiere theatrical stage, the Diana Wortham Theatre. Come enjoy a behind the scenes journey as ALO General Director David Craig Starkey and a cast of industry professionals guide you through their operatic world. |

UNC Asheville's Concerts on the Quad

 UNC Asheville's Concerts on the Quad features music ranging from folk, bluegrass and country, to soul, funk, rock, Latin and jazz. There are two more concerts in the series, on July 11 and 18, 7-8:30 p.m. on the UNC Asheville Quad.  On Monday, July 11, 7 p.m.  
Joe Lasher Jr.,  a progressive Southern and country rock artist from Weaverville, will perform.  For more information, visit joelasherjr.com. Following the concert, Lookout Observatory student docents from UNC Asheville will be on hand to operate portable telescopes for concert attendees. The moon and other celestial objects will be available for viewing. Attendees are invited to bring chairs, blankets and picnics to enjoy along with the music. Meals, treats and drinks will be available from concession stands on the Quad. Concerts on the Quad are sponsored by the Asheville Citizen-Times and Ingles.

 Discover how to make your artwork have the WOW factor! Learn about using complementary colors, color wheel and shadows to bring your art to the next level. You will be amazed at what a difference learning this can make in your creative journey! Bring your choice of media, including oils, acrylics, watercolors, colored pencils, pastels and others. The instructor will offer lots of hands-on and one-on-one attention, and all experience levels are welcome. Participants will complete two pieces. Medicare Choices Made Easy!Friday, July 15, 2016, 2 p.m.
   Are you new to Medicare? Are you confused by the many choices? Unbiased and accurate information is available from trained volunteers from the North Carolina Seniors' Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP). In this partnership between the Council on Aging of Buncombe County and OLLI, a free class will be held on Friday, July 15, 2 p.m. This session will be an overview (plans, parts, and policies) of Medicare. Spaces are limited, and registration is required. Reserve your space by visiting the Council on Aging of Buncombe County website (you may click here. )    In addition, beginning at noon, representatives from the Social Security Administration  will be available to answer questions about Social Security benefits and Medicare enrollment. They will also provide detailed instructions for accessing the Agency's online services @ www.socialsecurity.gov . |

OLLI - Voices and Stories
 A series of programs broadcast on WPVM-FM, 103.7 FM, in Asheville, NC and available anytime at wpvmfm.orgIn April 2016, OLLI began producing a series of one hour programs   on local low-power radio station WPVM. The shows air on Sundays at 7 p.m. on the station at 103.7 FM. The station also broadcasts online at wpvmfm.org. The programs provide outreach from OLLI to interest the general public in membership. Program #1 featured Catherine Frank on the history of OLLI and Dave Castel with story tellers Chuck Fink and Cindy Berryman-Fink. 
 
 Program #2 featured community volunteering in the Asheville City schools with Sarah Reincke and Judy and Bill LaMee's interview about UNC Asheville mentoring with Dick Murray and popular teacher Jim Lenburg.  
 
 Program #3 is about the College for Seniors with Program Manager Herb Gunn and popular instructors and College for Seniors committee members  Paula Withrow and Bobbie Rockwell.

M.C. Richards at  Black Mountain College Workshop Thursday through Sunday, July 7-9 This workshop will include hands-on research, farm work, pottery, poetry, cooking and immersion in M.C.
