Taking Another Look:  New Views of the
Blue Ridge Parkway

Anne Whisnant
Please join Dr. Whisnant, UNC-Chapel Hill faculty,  as she explores the complicated and often contentious processes that brought the Blue Ridge Parkway into being from the 1930s to the 1980s.  Looking at stories of Asheville, Little Switzerland, Ashe County, Cherokee, and Grandfather Mountain, she will examine historical conflicts over land purchases, routing, and Parkway access and use.  Drawing from Dr. Whisnant's experience as the scholarly adviser to the online portal "Driving Through Time: The Digital Blue Ridge Parkway," the program will demonstrate how new technologies (especially the ability to overlay historic and present-day maps) are changing how we can teach and learn about the Parkway's past in order to create a vision for its future.  Questions form the audience will be encouraged.   Tickets sold at the door.  General Public - $5 donation requested.  WNCHA members free.

Hearing Loss Association of America Meeting
"Assistive Listening Devices: Getting More From Your Hearing Aids"
Saturday, June 18,
10:30 a.m.
Seymour Auditorium,
Care Partners Campus,
68 Sweeten Creek Road

Hearing aids are not able to help a lot beyond about six feet, and cochlear implants have similar limitations. Did you know that there is help for that and for other aspects of coping with hearing loss besides these two common types of assistive devices? If you know that OLLI has hearing loops installed in Rooms 102 and 206, then you have some awareness of that.
The speaker will be Charles Spencer, a hearing loop installer who also has a lot of experience of other devices. He will be calling on some other folks to share their experience too.
Dear OLLI Members,

We have had a successful open registration period using our new online registration system.  Thanks to staff and volunteers who made this first online registration such a success.  We were able to enroll everyone in at least one course of their choosing and have a record 689 people registered for our summer term.

We hope that you have marked your calendar to attend our Advance Care Planning Workshop this Thursday, June 16, 7 p.m..  If you have already completed an advance directive, please let important people in your life know about this free workshop.  Thanks to OLLI members Mary Campbell and David Mouw and to OLLI staff members Ann Cadle and Leanna Preston for their hard work on this quarterly workshop.  If you would like to serve as a witness for those having their Short Form notarized, please reply to this email.  We are looking for four people to make sure that the process runs smoothly.

Finally, we look forward to seeing you at a performance Sunday, June 19, 2 p.m. by Barbara Bates Smith of her monodrama "Ivy Rowe," based on Lee Smith's novel Fair and Tender Ladies. This is a rare opportunity to see a compelling performer right in the Manheimer Room at no charge.  Seating will be first come, first served and donations will be gratefully accepted.

With gratitude for the many people who contribute to OLLI's success,

Catherine Frank
Executive Director
