Western North Carolina Historical Association

Saturday, June 25, 2 p.m.  Reuter Center's  Manheimer Room  Taking Another Look:  New Views of the  Blue Ridge Parkway

Please join Dr. Anne Mitchell Whisnant, UNC-Chapel Hill faculty,  as she explores the complicated and often contentious processes that brought the Blue Ridge Parkway into being from the 1930s to the 1980s.  Looking at stories of Asheville, Little Switzerland, Ashe County, Cherokee and Grandfather Mountain she develops historical conflicts over land purchases, routing, and Parkway access and use.  Drawing from her experience as the scholarly adviser to the online portal "Driving Through Time: The Digital Blue Ridge Parkway," Dr. Whisnant will demonstrate how new technologies (especially the ability to overlay historic and present-day maps) are changing how we can teach and learn about the Parkway's past in order to create a vision for its future.  Questions form the audience will be encouraged.    Tickets sold at the door.   General Public - $5.00 donation requested.   |

Dear OLLI Members,
Sorry the newsletter is a little late this week.  With the excitement of online registration and the activity of a very successful Creative Retirement Exploration Weekend, we have been very busy.
We hope you received your schedule for Summer 2016 classes on Friday.  Please call on Monday morning if you did not receive a schedule that you expected or if you are not sure how to interpret what you received.

Thanks to the many wonderful people who helped with the Creative Retirement Exploration Weekend (CREW).  We had informative and thought-provoking presentations from Steve Barone, David Castel, Patrick Chitwood, Tina Reinke, Lauren Halpren, Tanya Fletcher, and Kimberly Payne Lee.  Kathleen Cantwell, Marty Gillen, Peter Landis, Kathleen Mainardi, Dwight Oltman, Lori Postal, Glenn Rimes, and Dorothy Routh shared their experiences choosing a retirement relocation destination.  Marie Bauer, Joe and Lenore Baum, Peter and Bebe Landis, Lois Penn, Sarah and Terry Reincke, Honey and Howard Solomon, and Barbara Von Hauzen all facilitated stimulating conversations. Binna Green, Christie Melear, Doug Sherry and Greg Walker all provided ways for participants to learn more about the Asheville real estate market.  Marie Bauer, Pat and Ron Hart, Gayle and Tom Hoffman, Doris Howard, Audrey Kipp, Lee and Linda Orowitz, and Lois Penn all helped with every area of logistics.  We cannot thank Fred and Linda Cardina enough for the many ways that they continue to help with the design and running of this program.  And of course many thanks to Laurel Jernigan for keeping everything in line and for making the program better every year.

With gratitude for the many people who contribute to OLLI's success, Catherine Frank Executive Director |
