Astronomy Club of Asheville "Star Formation Through Radio Eyes"
Thursday, May 5, 7 p.m. Reuter Center Manheimer Room
The discovery of radio frequency radiation from the Milky Way by Karl Jansky in the early 1930s marked the birth of radio astronomy.  The full potential of this field was not realized until a few decades later with the discovery of radio emissions from a variety of different molecules that exist throughout the interstellar medium, particularly in the densest and coolest regions of space called molecular clouds, the "birth places of stars." Dr. Thompson will discuss the motivation and methods for radio observations of molecular clouds and will present an overview of what we have learned about the star formation process from such observations.
