Read to Succeed provides Reading Coaches and Reading Buddies who spend quality, one-on-one time with children at the Asheville City elementary schools.   They support volunteers with active training and assistance.

The next monthly

Dear OLLI Members,
Thanks to those who attended our Town Hall meeting on Thursday, March 31.  Tomorrow afternoon (Monday, April 4) we will send out our slate of officers to be affirmed, and some time in the next two weeks we will post notes from the meeting and responses to our annual member survey.

Please be aware that the university will be hosting the 30th National Conference on Undergraduate Research on April 7-9 on the campus.  OLLI has canceled all classes, events, special interest groups and meetings that usually meet on the university campus on those days.  Conference organizers expect over 4000 students from across the country to be on campus on those days, so parking will be very challenging.  We urge OLLI members to enjoy learning from home on these couple of days. Please note that on Thursday John Himmelheber's "Golf for Beginners" and Denna Yockey's "Improver Line Dance" which meet off campus will stick to their regular schedule. The Special Interest Group The Forum will meet on Friday at Earth Fare in Westgate Shopping Center.

With gratitude for the many people who contribute to OLLI's success,
Catherine Frank
Executive Director

Let us know where you volunteer

National Volunteer Week happens nationwide April 10 -16, 2016. OLLI's Civic Engagement Committee will have flip charts on the upper level and lower levels of the Reuter Center throughout the month of April so that members can volunteer where they volunteer.  These lists will be anonymous, but we will use them to highlight the many ways that OLLI members give back to the broader community.  In the past members have listed over 200 organizations. Let's see how many organizations we can list!

Assistive Hearing  Headsets Available!

OLLI has a number of assistive hearing headsets available for use in the two classrooms equipped with a hearing loop - Room 102 and Room 206.  Drop by the OLLI office to check out a headset and increase your listening pleasure if you need assistance and do not have hearing aids or a t-coil in your hearing aid.s

"How Germany Sees The World"
by Thomas Wülfing

Since the "end of the Cold War" a reunited Germany has emerged as a dynamic economic power in the world's financial and trade system.  It has also become the diplomatic anchor of the European Union.  Germany's Chancellor, Angela Merkel, was chosen as Time Magazine's "Person of the Year" for 2015.  How Germany views the world and how Germans see its peoples are critical elements in understanding alliance politics (particularly in the West) and strategic and military influences throughout other regions of the world.   Recent events (the tragic terrorist attacks in Brussels, and the recent German election) have made Mr. Wülfing's topic even more significant and timely.

Thomas Wülfing
Thomas Wülfing holds economic degrees from the Universities of Hamburg and Bonn.  In 1991 he joined the German Foreign Service after completing graduate work in the Diplomatic Academy.  He has served his country with postings in a plethora of cities ranging from assignments in Bonn, London and New York, to varied roles in: Baghdad, Iraq; Pyongyang, North Korea; Recife, Brazil; and Colombo, Sri Lanka.  He has occupied his current office in the Atlanta Consulate since the summer of 2013

This program is offered by the World Affairs Council of WNC, and co-sponsored by UNC Asheville's department of political science, in cooperation with OLLI.  WAC members and UNC Asheville students are admitted without charge.  Single admission is $10.
OLLI members receive a discount on
WAC Annual Membership.

VOLUNTEER TREASURER NEEDED (A LOT!)

The Lord's Acre (TLA), WNC's leading hunger garden, needs a new treasurer. It's a very part-time job for a nonprofit that's doing wonderful, beautiful and fun work. TLA (which is not a faith-based organization, by the way) grows and gives away fresh organic food (12 tons last year) to those in need, gives hundreds of people the chance to volunteer in a garden, teaches gardening and teaches groups all over the country how to start their own hunger garden. Learn more about us at www.thelordsacre.org. Contact Susan Sides, Executive Director (susides@gmail.com  828.628.3688) if you'd like to consider helping us help.
