MANNA Volunteer Opportunities
(grab them while they last!)
Manna Food Bank
1.)  The Civic Engagement Committee is looking for volunteers who are interested in joining the team of MANNA volunteer drivers.  MANNA Volunteer Drivers perform pickups and deliveries within MANNA's 16 county region.  Volunteers work in pairs, driving a small MANNA box truck (the truck is similar to a small Uhaul truck and does not require a CDL).  Interested volunteers must pass a driving background check, and have a flexible schedule (truck trips usually last from the morning into the early afternoon).  Volunteer drivers receive periodic emails with needed dates for volunteer coverage.  The volunteers only respond to the opportunities that work for their schedule.

2.)  Our second opportunity is to serve as a Facility Care Volunteer.  MANNA is in the process of having its warehouse certified by the American Institute of Bakers (AIB).  AIB certification requires a high level of cleanliness, sanitation and organization within the facility.  MANNA seeks a small corps of volunteers to help the organization achieve and maintain AIB certification. This is a cleaning crew volunteer job
consisting of several types of cleaning but no heavy lifting.

If either of these opportunities appeal to you, please contact Sarah Reincke at sarahreincke@gmail.com
Dear OLLI Members,
We had a successful first week of classes and look forward to seeing you at our Town Hall meeting, Thursday, March 31, 4:30 p.m. in the Manheimer Room, to celebrate success, answer questions, and look forward to future developments.

We hope that you will take time to read Lynn Sellers' story about Gene Lambirth and his travels on the Camino de Santiago.

Finally, we know that our newsletter is often very long, because we want you to know about the many learning opportunities in our organization, on the UNC Asheville campus, and in our community.  Please be aware that many browsers will cut the document short.  There is always a link at the top of the newsletter allowing you to view it on a website, and when you do, you will always see the whole newsletter.

With gratitude for the many people who contribute to OLLI's success,
Catherine Frank
Executive Director

Gene Lambirth:  One Man's Journey on the Camino de Santiago

By Lynn Sellers

It's been called a quest, adventure and pilgrimage.  Each traveler has his or her own motivation to walk the Camino.  For Gene Lambirth, it answered a question many retirees ask: What do I want to do now?

Gene took early retirement from a major oil company in 2005 but returned as a consultant until 2008.  Having lived in major cities like Houston, San Francisco and New Orleans, Gene and his wife Gay were clear on one thing: they wanted to live downtown in a small city with a university and amenities.  He and Gay visited Asheville in different seasons and concluded, "This would be a great place to live."

Please join in to help with this worthy cause!  Bring your old jeans to OLLI, Room 213, and we will deliver to the UNC Asheville students cutting shoe patterns for the Sole Hope project.  Click here to read more.  Donations will be collected up to Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m.

The Tribal Spirit:
American Indian Identity in the 21st Century
Dr. Perry Horse
Thursday, March 31, Noon
UNC Asheville Intercultural Center
located in Highsmith Student Union

Dr. Perry Horse
Perry Horse
will focus on research around post-colonial consciousness which is moving indigenous people from a state of dependency back to a state of independence and self-reliance.  This new consciousness is guided by the touchstone of Indian identity, tribal sovereignty.  Reasserting political sovereignty provides the basis for strengthening tribal governments which in turn helps strengthen economic recovery.  Tribes now control their own educational systems which provide a new impetus for native language retention and cultural preservation.

Dr. Horse is a member of the Kiowa Tribe and a contributing author in both editions of
New Perspectives on Racial Identity Development, NYU Press, 2001 & 2012.
Currently, he serves as a leadership coach in the community college national reform movement known as Achieving the Dream. For more information contact Deborah Miles at dmiles@unca.edu or 828.232.5024.

This talk and workshop is sponsored by the Diversity Action Council and the Office of American Indian Outreach.

How Germany Sees The World
by Thomas Wülfing

Since the "end of the Cold War" a reunited Germany has emerged as a dynamic economic power in the world's financial and trade system.  It has also become the diplomatic anchor of the European Union.  Germany's Chancellor, Angela Merkel, was chosen as Time Magazine's "Person of the Year" for 2015.  How Germany views the world and how Germans see themselves are critical elements in understanding alliance politics (particularly in the West) and strategic and military influences throughout other regions of the world.   Recent events (the tragic terrorist attacks in Brussels and the recent German election) have made Mr. Wülfing's topic even more significant and timely.

Thomas Wülfing
Thomas Wülfing holds economic degrees from the Universities of Hamburg and Bonn.  In 1991 he joined the German Foreign Service after completing graduate work in the Diplomatic Academy.  He has served his country with postings in many cities, ranging from assignments in Bonn, London and New York, to varied roles in Baghdad, Iraq, Pyongyang, North Korea, Recife, Brazil, and Colombo, Sri Lanka.  He has occupied his current office in the Atlanta Consulate since the summer of 2013

This program is offered by the World Affairs Council of WNC, and co-sponsored by UNC Asheville's Department of Political Science, in cooperation with the Osher Life Long Learning Institute.  WAC members and UNC Asheville students are admitted without charge.
