Dear OLLI Members,
We had a invigorating new member welcome on Friday and look forward to having members back in class on Monday.  Please see links in this newsletter for information about the shuttle, an easy way to avoid parking hassles, and the daily schedule, so that you know where your classes are before you get to the Reuter Center.  Don't forget about the parking lot at the end of Campus View Drive.

You may notice a number of volunteer opportunities listed in this newsletter.  Please remember that OLLI at UNC Asheville runs on volunteer energy and activity.  We invite you to submit a proposal to teach a class, to be a class rep, to offer to help with member socials or to serve on one of many committees and task forces.  The marketing committee particularly needs help. Please talk to Laurel Jernigan or Caitlin Han in the OLLI office to see how you can get involved.

We hope that you will take some time to read about the Art SIG, organized by Diane Chambers, and to study the Cyber Security tips provided by our Apple Users SIG.  These are just two of the many special interest groups that allow members to pursue learning and friendship together in our community.

Don't forget that we want to hear from you.  See the link below to submit questions for our Town Hall meeting. You may click here to find a link to our Annual Member Survey. We have only heard from about 40% of you at this point and would love to make it to our record of 55%. We will close the survey on Monday, March 21, 5 p.m., so please don't miss this chance to participate.  And as always, remember that you do not need to wait for a Town Hall meeting or a survey to share your ideas for ways to make our organization better.  We cannot act on all suggestions, but we will be better if we share information.

Many people collaborate to make OLLI run.We are truly grateful for all that you contribute to OLLI's success,
Catherine Frank
Executive Director

The Tribal Spirit:
American Indian Identity in the 21st Century
Dr. Perry Horse

UNC Asheville Intercultural Center l
ocated in Highsmith Student Union

Dr. Perry Horse will give a lecture on "The Tribal Spirit: American Indian Identity in the 21st Century," focusing
Perry Horse
on research around post-colonial consciousness which is moving indigenous people from a state of dependency back to a state of independence and self-reliance.  This new consciousness is guided by the touchstone of Indian identity-tribal sovereignty.  Reasserting political sovereignty provides the basis for strengthening tribal governments which in turn helps strengthen economic recovery.  Tribes now control their own educational systems which provide a new impetus for native language retention and cultural preservation.

Dr. Horse is a member of the Kiowa Tribe and a contributing author in both editions of
New Perspectives on Racial Identity Development, NYU Press, 2001 & 2012.
Currently, he serves as a leadership coach in the community college national reform movement known as Achieving the Dream. For more information contact Deborah Miles at dmiles@unca.edu/232-5024.
