Tellers are brought to you by Stories on Asheville's Front Porch.  Donations are requested to support the free Saturday morning storytelling sessions in downtown Asheville, July 2016.

SIG The Forum Meeting

This two-man readers theatre performance features Kermit Brown and Jim Reid and will be directed by Elliot Weiner, assisted by Ruth Planey. A reviewer in The New York Times has written that the play is "a sharp, lively discourse, and audience members searching for engaging debate will be pleased."
 The performance will be followed by a talkback.

The Autumn Players (part of Asheville Community Theatre) is a troupe of seasoned actors dedicated to taking the theatre experience into the community. Readings of great literature by experienced performers can spark deep understanding and kindle lasting interest. As words jump from the page with conviction and emotion, stories come to life.
 Tickets are $6 at the door.

Chautauqua 2016

It is time to share the good news that there very likely will be a Buncombe County Chautauqua series in June of 2016.  A group of dedicated Chautauqua audience members and former volunteers, coordinated by retired Buncombe County Library director Ed Sheary has been making plans.  Programs will be held at Fergusson Auditorium .  The theme this year is "America Adventurers - Explore, Dream, Discover."

Later today we will send out a link to our Annual Member Survey.  We also hope that you will mark your calendars to attend our Annual Town Hall Meeting on Thursday, March 31, 4:30 p.m. If you would like to submit a question for us to consider, please click here for a link to a Google form. Your questions will be anonymous. We will have a question box on the information table in the upper lobby of the Reuter Center for those who would prefer to submit that way.  And of course, we would love to have you ask questions directly at the Town Hall Meeting, when we will have committee chairs and OLLI staff on hand to address your concerns.

Don't forget that daylight savings time began early this morning, so make sure you have your clocks set properly. You will want to be on time if you want to attend today's storytelling to benefit Stories on Asheville's Front Porch.  There are some wonderful tellers presenting today, a perfect way to spend a dreary Sunday afternoon.

Revised College for Seniors schedules go out tomorrow in the late afternoon.  Remember that if you want a full refund for courses that you must let us know by Friday, March 18, 3 p.m. We also welcome everyone to our new member welcome at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 18 to learn more about the many opportunities to learn in community at OLLI. 

Remember that there are many learning and entertainment opportunities at UNC Asheville. In this newsletter you can read about a lecture on Bob Dylan sponsored by UNC Asheville's Center for Jewish Studies, a performance by our own Reuter Center Singers and a group of UNC Asheville ensembles in a Concert for Peace or a performance by the "Voice of the Tunisian Revolution," Emel Mathlouthi.  And of course, you may want to attend today's Big South women's basketball championship game when the UNC Asheville Bulldogs will take on Liberty University. Click here to find out more about the game.

Steve Stevens
Meditation SIG meeting in Room 102 B.  At this meeting, Steve Stevens, who teaches tai chi chih in the College for Seniors program, will talk about Justin Stone and how he came to develop this practice.  Then Steve will instruct us in the movements and the breathing meditation which comprise the tai chi chih practice. This a gentle, moving meditation which may be done standing or sitting.

Learn how Bob Dylan, a self-defined religious outlaw, makes sense of his own creed: "To live outside the law you must be honest." Dr. Stephen Hazan 
Arnoff, president and CEO of the Jewish Community Center Association, has authored book chapters on Dylan and religion, and Bruce Springsteen and the Bible. His writing also appears in the Huffington Post, the American Jewish newspaper The Forward, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz and on his blog about music, art, and religion,

Botanist Tim Spira

Botanist Tim Spira will show beautiful photographs of common and not-so-common spring wildflowers in the Blue Ridge Mountains including trilliums, trout lily, wild ginger, mayapple, bearcorn, Jack-in-the-pulpit, pink lady's slipper, Oconee bells, Carolina silverbell, yellow buckeye, spicebush, and pawpaw. Along the way, he'll describe interesting features of wildflowers including interactions between plants and their pollinators, herbivores, and frugivores.
Tim Spira is a plant ecologist and professor emeritus
Tom Spira
of botany at Clemson University where he taught field botany and plant ecology for 22 years. He received a doctorate in botany from UC Berkeley and conducted post-doctoral research on plant-pollinator interactions. Tim has published numerous papers in scientific journals including a cover article in the journal Nature. He's also the author of the award-winning book, Wildflowers & Plant Communities of the Southern Appalachian Mountains & Piedmont. His latest book is Waterfalls & Wildflowers in the Southern Appalachians. Tim spends his free time hiking and gardening with native plants.

Right before our first Fab Friday lecture for Spring 2016, you have an opportunity to learn from and ask questions of five of UNC Asheville's undergraduate neurobiology research students.
They have teamed up to discuss with you their assessment of current research findings, which they will present in three posters: "Chocolate Improves Your Brain Health," "Brain Changing Meditation," and "Training the Brain with Action Video Games".

After you explore your health questions about these three subjects, follow up at the Fab Friday lecture with Amy Fowler's 11:30 a.m. presentation about geriatric care management.
Free and open to the public. 
Come out to learn and to give UNC Asheville students practice presenting their research to an inquisitive audience.

 Amy Fowler, owner and care manager with WNC Geriatric Care Management, will define the role of a care manager and explain why a care manager is such a valuable part of your elder care team. Her discussion will include real life examples, questions to ask when choosing a care manager and how to utilize a care manager to provide you and your family peace of mind.

When Kobe Bryant announced his retirement

from professional basketball, he did it in the form of a poem about his love for the game, proving once again that poetry is shaped language that deals with what is most important to us.

Mike Ross will read from his new book of poems, Small Engine Repair, and talk about the role of poetry in our lives. Mike has been teaching a popular poetry course at the OLLI for the last several years. Copies of his book will be available at the reading; they are also available at Malaprop's Book Store, from the publisher at Flpbookstore@aol.com, and from Amazon.com.
Hope Chest for Women Seeks Volunteer

The Hope Chest supports women in treatment or at risk for breast and gynecologic cancer living in Western North Carolina.  The group is looking for a volunteer with prior grant and fund development experience to help with grant preparation and grant research. Use your experience to train, mentor and work alongside others. Prior nonprofit experience and a passion for community volunteerism would help and training/support will be provided.  
Time:
  A few hours per week, preferably Monday mornings or afternoons

School Volunteers Needed
Many students at Enka Middle School could benefit from having a volunteer tutor or mentor to meet with them once a week. Below are a few of the opportunities to be a positive, caring adult in a student's life!
 
Lunch Buddy
Any day between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.: Once per week, meet with one student or a small group of students, doing pre-planned activities or talking with them during lunch.
Before-School Tutor
Tuesdays or Thursdays, 7-7:40 a.m.: Once per week, tutor and/or read with students in small groups who have been identified as needing additional academic support in math, reading or language arts.
Before-School Breakfast Buddy
- Tuesdays or Thursdays, 7-7:40 a.m.: Once per week, spend time getting to know one student or a small group of students. You can do pre-planned activities with them or just hang out and chat.

A Concert for Peace

"Peacemakers," by  British composer Karl Jenkins is a fascinating work about world peace and global connection that includes texts by Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., Mother Teresa, Percy Shelley and Anne Frank. This concert combines choir, percussion, including ethnic percussion instruments, brass and soloists in a joyous expression of people of all races and creeds coming together in singing. The concert will feature the UNC Asheville combined choirs, under the direction of Dr. Melodie Galloway, in collaboration with the beautiful voices of the Reuter Center Singers, Chuck Taft, conductor, and the UNC Asheville Percussion Ensemble, Director, Matthew Richmond.
