Roller Derby:

Since establishing themselves ten years ago, they have won an impressive number of matches and have earned some medals along the way.  Several members of the league will offer a behind the scenes look at the training, culture, and community that has evolved to support this exciting sport. Plus, team members will show off some skating moves!

and open to the public.
College for Seniors
Changes in Health and Fitness Courses for 2016
  senior fitness
We have made several important changes that affect College for Seniors (CFS) and its health, fitness and dance courses for the Spring 2016 term. CFS will introduce two pilot partnerships through which five CFS health and fitness courses will be taught, exclusively for OLLI members. Four of these courses will be taught at the Woodfin YMCA and one at RISE Authentic Pilates in downtown Asheville during the Spring term.

College for Seniors is raising the participant fee from $20 to $30 for health and fitness courses that are either taught by certified, self-insured, paid instructors or held in a location other than the Reuter Center so that the participant fees more closely subsidize the costs of paying our instructors.

We will hold an information session on Friday, February 5, 3:30 p.m. for OLLI members who would like more information about the changes.

Dear OLLI Members,
We hope you are staying warm and safe at home during this winter storm.  We will announce in this newsletter information about lectures and events that we will be able to re-schedule.

It is hard to say what conditions will be like tomorrow morning (Monday, January 25). As always we base our decisions on opening and closing the Reuter Center by balancing the safety of our members with the desire to keep our programming on schedule.  Please remember that the best way to determine whether we will be closing is to wait for an email from us. If you do not hear anything, assume we are proceeding with our usual schedule.

When we make a decision to close or delay our activities, we will also post information as soon as possible on our website (olliasheville.com) and on the outgoing messages for OLLI office phones at 828-251-6140 and 828-251-6188.  Some OLLI members may remember a "snow line" operated by the university, but we no longer advise using that number.  While we are always closed when the university closes for adverse weather, we sometimes make a decision to close when the rest of the university continues classes.  We recognize that our community of teachers and learners differs from the rest of the university, and we want to make decisions based on your needs.

Some of you may have noticed a new face at the Reuter Center.  We are proud to announce that Caitlin Han has joined our staff as our administrative support person.  Caitlin graduated from UNC Asheville in 2012 with a degree in interdisciplinary studies and minors in history and Asian studies.  After graduating she moved to Incheon, South Korea, where she taught English as a second language to kindergarten and elementary students.  Most recently she has worked as a flight attendant for Delta Air Lines, which allowed her the opportunity to travel even more.  She tells us that now that she has both feet on the ground, she is excited to begin a new chapter working with the community here at OLLI. Please stop by to greet Caitlin and welcome her.

With gratitude for the many people who contribute to OLLI's success,
Catherine Frank
Executive Director

Literacy and English proficiency are tools that help people move out of poverty and get better-paying jobs. Literacy allows parents to read to their children and support their education.
