College for Seniors
Changes in Health and Fitness Courses for 2016
The College for Seniors (CFS) is making changes that will affect CFS health, fitness and dance courses for the spring 2016 term. CFS will introduce two pilot partnerships through which five CFS health and fitness courses will be taught, exclusively for OLLI members. Four of these courses will be taught at the Woodfin YMCA and one at RISE Authentic Pilates in downtown Asheville during the spring term.
College for Seniors is raising the participant fee from $20 to $30 for health and fitness courses that are either taught by certified, self-insured, paid instructors or held in a location other than the Reuter Center so that the participant fees more closely subsidize the costs of paying our instructors.
An email will be sent on Tuesday, January 19, to all OLLI members outlining this new initiative in more detail.
An
information sharing meeting will be held
Friday, January 22, 9-10 a.m., at the Reuter Center for OLLI members who would like more information about the changes.

Age related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of vision loss in the United States. In addition to the increase in our aging population, we are using our eyes like never before in history.
Join Dr. Kim Walters, owner of Optix Eye Care, as she discusses AMD, and the newest threat to our health, blue light, which is emitted in high concentration from our smartphones, tablets, computers, TVs, fluorescent lights, and LED lighting. With 18 years of experience practicing optometry in Weaverville, Dr. Walters is an expert on the prevention, early detection and management of ocular disease.

Dear OLLI Members,
We had a successful first week of College for Seniors Winter 2016 classes, with a record enrollment and a record number of full courses. Thanks to all of the members of the College for Seniors committee (led by Judy Piotrowski, Bobbie Rockwell, Paul Williamson, and Paula Withrow), to all of our talented instructors and to our energetic members who all contribute to the success of our community of teachers and learners.
If you are interested in teaching a course in the College for Seniors or know someone who would like to share a passion with an enthusiastic audience of lifelong learners, remember that the deadline for proposing Summer 2016 courses is this Friday, January 22. See the links to forms in this newsletter.
The OLLI office and the Reuter Center will be closed tomorrow, Monday, January 18, in commemoration of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. Please see information in this newsletter about the many events taking place all week on the UNC Asheville campus, including a keynote lecture by former Asheville mayor Terry Bellamy, who will discuss creating a culture of inclusion.
The King holiday is distinguished as a day of service rather than a "day off." We want to take this opportunity to thank Sarah Reincke and all of the members of OLLI's Civic Engagement Committee for their ongoing efforts to provide opportunities for OLLI members to serve the wider community through their Call to Action initiatives working with MANNA Food Bank and the Asheville City Schools Foundation. Thanks to all of our volunteers who serve on the committees and teach the classes and do all of the things that make the OLLI at UNC Asheville community such a special place.
With gratitude for the many people who contribute to OLLI's success, Catherine Frank Executive Director
