Dear OLLI Members,
We hope that you have remembered to turn your clocks back as daylight savings time ended this morning at 2 a.m.
Please take some time to read marketing committee member David Langdon's article about OLLI member, artist, and community volunteer Donna Schramek. Donna exemplifies the kind of purposeful engagement that makes for a creative retirement. Don't forget to mark your calendars for the OLLI Art Bazaar, November 13 and 14; Donna works with OLLI staffer Leanna Preston and OLLI member Sheila Murphy to make this event happen (and she will have her beautiful weaving on display).
Even as our fall College for Seniors term winds down, we have another rich week of activities coming up right here at the Reuter Center and on the UNC Asheville campus. Today you can hear a performance from Brevard Music Center faculty and then a performance from The Autumn Players of "The Winslow Boy." On Tuesday, the World Affairs Council offers an opportunity to hear about the Middle East and on Thursday, you can venture to campus for a dialogue about terrorism between a UNC Asheville professor and an undergraduate student. Later on Thursday you can choose between a talk from the Astronomy Club of Asheville and a rare opportunity to hear Professor Henry Louis Gates at Kimmel Arena, in a talk on "Genealogy, Genetics, and African American History." We suggest that you arrive early to get a good seat for the Gates lecture (and a parking space) and that you realize that bags will be searched before you are admitted to the arena. On Friday, Charlie Flynn-McIver comes to give us a "behind-the-scenes" look at the work of NC Stage. And next Sunday, November 8, 5 pm, PanHarmonia will offer its annual Elegy Holocaust Remembrance concert, this year titled "Songs of Lamentation" and featuring the music of Ernest Bloch, Hilary Tann, Joseph Jongen and Felix Mendelssohn.
An article recently ran inThe Charlotte Observer about our programs. I had calls from a number of Charlotte retirees wondering why they did not have this kind of program in their area. Some OLLI staff and volunteers recently attended the Osher Institutes National Conference (also in Charlotte this year). Time and again people told us how much they envied all the varied programming we offer. We all know that these programs only happen with the hard work and passion of our OLLI staff and members. I am very grateful to be part of our community here at the Reuter Center and on the UNC Asheville campus, Thanks for your many contributions to our work.
With gratitude,
Catherine Frank
Executive Director

Keeping busy in retirement is good!
Having a good balance in your life
is even better!
By David Langdon
Donna Schramek is one of those people who likes to be involved in a lot of interesting things in retirement. Although she spends a good deal of time helping at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at UNC Asheville, she also makes time for her other passions, which include working with dogs and cats at Brother Wolf, doing creative weaving projects, and enjoying foreign travel.
Donna's husband, Greg, retired in 1993 from a long career in the telecommunications industry; Donna considered herself a professional "trailing spouse" for many years. In 1998 they started a bed and breakfast in the Charlotte area and ran it for eight years.

by Dr. Samer Traboulsi,
Department of History
Mr. Tristan Mead,
UNC Asheville undergraduate student,

The Middle East is living its bleakest days. The panel discussion led by Dr. Samer Traboulsi, associate professor of history, and Mr. Tristan Mead, a sophomore undergraduate student and an expert on ISIS and radical groups in the Middle East, aims to address the causes leading to the rise and success of this terrorist organization and discuss solutions to this world crisis.

We will review why it is easy to believe that we are alone in the solar system and what has changed this view. In particular, we will discuss Mars and the Jovian moons, as NASA spacecraft have shown them to us.

Mr. Helms is a 30-year financial service veteran with an occasionally irreverent view of Wall Street. He will share how retirees can assess the building blocks of their financial strategies and take a close look at how retirement planning and investments are packaged by the financial industry and how (or if) they have evolved since 2008. Lively discussion is encouraged! Bring your questions. If you have a written financial plan, please bring that too. No personal information needs to be shared, but it might be helpful to have your own blueprint in hand for our discussion. The meeting is open to all OLLI members.
