ATTENTION
Parking Deck Closed One Day for Repair
Monday, October 12, 2015

On Monday, October 12, the Sherrill Center Parking Deck will be closed all day in order to do required maintenance.

If you normally park in the Sherrill Center Parking Deck, you are encouraged  to park at 118 W.T. Weaver Blvd. and take the Red Route shuttle back to campus.  The shuttle runs from 7:30 am until 9:30 pm and arrives at the lot every 12 minutes.  Travel time from the W.T. Weaver lot to the Bulldog at the corner of Campus Dr. and University Heights is six inutes.

Thank you for your consideration and patience as the university makes these improvements to the condition of the deck.

The Carolinas' Nature Photographers Association (CNPA) was founded in 1992 to promote nature photography in the Carolinas, to help conserve and preserve the diverse natural ecosystems in the Carolinas and to educate others interested in nature and wildlife photography.

 Activities in the Asheville region include photo outings, seminars, workshops, exhibits, photo contests, image critiques, and monthly meetings at the Reuter Center, held the second Sunday of each month, with a social beginning at 5:30 p.m., meeting 6-8 p.m.

We will welcome special guest Genie Hardee to the October 12th Meditation meeting. Genie has studied qigong with Chinese masters and American teachers for many years. She has been a qigong teacher since 1996.  Click here to learn more about Genie's practice.

In Chinese "qigong" means "cultivating life."  Ancient Chinese shamans created beautiful dance like meditations, which move, enhance, and increase energy flow through the body. Genie will guide you in experiencing this lovely spiritual practice.  She will help you feel the Qi (chee).   This will be a wonderful experience.  

After our SIG on Monday we will have a social.  All can attend either the SIG or the social or both.  We will meet at the UNC Asheville cafeteria  
6-6:15 p.m., so please join us. If you have a One Card please bring it, if you do not have a One Card bring cash.

OLLI membership is required to participate.

Leaders from UNC Asheville's MLAS program  will meet with interested OLLI members to discuss opportunities to participate in this interdisciplinary graduate level liberal arts program.
 
The stimulating program of small evening seminars allows participants to create individualized study in cultural, social, and theoretical issues. Whether your interests lie in creative writing, astronomy, climate change, history or elsewhere, you can build-your-own program using the rich faculty resources of UNC Asheville.
 
Learn more with representatives from the MLAS program's administrators and faculty, as well as some OLLI members who are or have been active in this grad program of study.

Advance Care Planning Workshop
Thursday, October 15,

The workshop will feature a panel whose members are experienced in addressing end-of-life issues. Discussion will include communicating your treatment wishes to loved ones and to medical personnel, ethical and legal issues, and the uses of advance directives.  Ample time will be reserved for questions.

Assistance will be provided for anyone wishing to complete a legally valid advance directive, including the notarization required in North Carolina, using the NC ACP "Short Form"

"Health Policy and Humor: The Road to the 
Affordable Care Act" 
by Bradley Fuller

The road to The Affordable Care Act (ACA) culminated a more than fifty year effort to achieve universal health insurance coverage for all Americans. 
The presentation will cover the major elements of the ACA and its limited application to seniors. The presentation will also include humorous responses by noted late night commentators as the process of attaining the ACA evolved. Fuller holds masters of arts and public administration from Kutztown University.
Free and open to the public, this lecture is part of the Health Education Series.

Bird-Friendly Communities Project Coordinator for Audubon North Carolina
 
With native plantings, your yard can make a real difference for birds year-round. Find out which perennials, shrubs and trees provide food birds need to survive and thrive. Join members of the Elisha Mitchell Audubon Society for a slide presentation by Kim Brand, ornithologist and Bird-Friendly Communities Project Coordinator for Audubon North Carolina. From planting the native plants birds need to succeed to putting up birdhouses, people can play a critical role in fostering healthy bird populations.

Dear OLLI Members,

It's another busy week here at the Reuter Center.  You can participate in Special Interest Groups to learn about qigong or to discuss the presidential debates.  You can learn from our community partners, including the Carolinas' Nature Photographers Association, the Council on Aging of Buncombe County, and the Asheville Symphony Orchestra. 

We will hold our quarterly Advance Care Planning Workshop (special thanks to OLLI members David Mouw and Mary Campbell for arranging this workshop and to OLLI staff members Ann Cadle and Leanna Preston for acting as notaries).  Howard Jaslow has organized a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Lecture on global energy resources by OLLI member Richard Wiener, and OLLI member Bill O'Connell has organized an opportunity to learn more about UNC Asheville's Master of Liberal Arts and Sciences degree.   

We hope you will mark your calendars to join us on Sunday, October 25, for the Asheville Living Treasures Recognition Ceremony, this fall honoring community members Clark Olsen, O.L. Sherrill, and Oralene SImmons.

A Moving Sound

Fusing traditional Taiwanese influences with a global sensibility, award winning ensemble A Moving Sound built a worldwide following through their joyous mix of original music and dance.

Featuring the distinctive timbres of the erhu (Chinese fiddle) and zhong ruan (lute), and the transcendent vocals of Mia Hsieh, A Moving Sound has devised a unique and compelling style that is all their own - a Taiwanese whirlwind that veers between the meditative and the exuberant with irrepressible spirit.


Special Interest Group: The Forum Meeting

   The Forum meetings offer a free-flowing dialogue designed to enrich and expand participants' thinking on topics ranging from changing demographics of retirees to nuclear disarmament. At the meeting on October 2, the group will focus on the topic, "The Presidential Debate"

New to Medicare Class

Medicare

Are you new to Medicare? Are you confused by the many choices? Unbiased and accurate information is available from trained volunteers from the North Carolina Seniors' Health Insurance Information Program. In partnership with OLLI, a free class will be held on Friday, October 16, 2-4 p.m. in the Reuter Center.

The class will provide important information to assist you in understanding how Medicare works and what you need to do to obtain benefits and save money. Spaces are limited so reserve your space by registering online at

or calling the Council on Aging of Buncombe County 828.277.8288  

In addition, from 12-4 p.m.   representatives from the Social Security Administration will be available to answer questions about Social Security benefits and Medicare enrollment. They will also provide detailed instructions for gaining access to the Agency's online services at www.socialsecurity.gov.

Symphony Talk with Daniel Meyer

This month's MasterWorks concert will feature the overture "Sidereus" by contemporary composer Osvaldo Golijov, concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra David Kim in Max Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1, and 
Robert Schumann's  Second Symphony.
Music aficionado Chip Kaufmann will talk about the composers, and Asheville Symphony Orchestra's music director and conductor Daniel Meyer will speak about the performance for the next evening's concert.

For more info and to schedule an appointment, call the MAHEC Community Screening Nurse for Healthy Heart Buncombe: 828-257-4471; it is helpful if you call several days in advance to schedule a screening.

Screenings take about 15 minutes and are scheduled at the Reuter Center.
