The Carolinas' Nature Photographers Association's goal is to develop a group that will more fully experience the beauty of Western North Carolina through photography. Activities in the Asheville region include photo outings, seminars, workshops, exhibits, photo contests, image critiques, and monthly meetings at the Reuter Center, held on the second Sunday of each month, with a social beginning at 5:30 pm, meeting 6-8 pm.  Upcoming meeting topics are:
  • Sunday, August 9: Members' Showcase: "Travel Photography"
  • Sunday, September 13: Image Critiques
  • Sunday, October 11: David Hartfield, "Landscapes: from Intimate to Grand Vistas"
  •  Sunday, November 8: Member Portfolio Challenge Presentations
Meditation SIG Meeting
Monday, August 10, 4:15 p.m.
Upcoming topics are diverse walking meditation programs.

The first, on Monday, August 10, is called "Secrets of Natural Walking" (SONW).

It will be lead by Deborah LaFon, Diana Stone, and Deborah "Raven" Kelly.

A major contribution of SONW is the realization that each step we take, when we walk properly, will align the body the way it is designed, removing stress on the joints while enabling the muscles to do the job, as they are supposed to.  The nerves, meridians, and reflexology zones are stimulated properly, and all parts of the body's natural healing system, the original blueprint, are activated with each step allowing our body to heal what is needed.  In addition to assisting the physical body, proper natural walking also helps our emotional health, mind and connecting to the spiritual heart.

You will not want to miss this one!

Hearing  Loss Association of America,
Asheville Chapter
Saturday, August 15, 10:30 am
CarePartners,
68 Sweeten Creek Road

Did you know that captioned telephones are available for people with hearing loss? Listening on the telephone is known to be among the most difficult situations for those with hearing loss. Captioned telephones enable users to see instead of hear, and some enable clearer hearing. If you have a documented hearing loss, you may be eligible to receive a captioned telephone paid for by state funding.

At the next Hearing Loss Association of America-Asheville Chapter meeting, on Saturday, August 15,  10.30 am, at Care  Partners, 68 Sweeten Creek Road, two people from CaptionCall, one company that provides  and promotes telephone-captioned phones, will present information about how these phones work and how you can get them.

Dear OLLI Members,

We had a very convivial morning on Friday, August 7, when members picked up catalogs and parking decals, greeted friends, and had a chance to talk with OLLI staff, including new College for Seniors program manager Herb Gunn.  Remember that you may pick up catalogs and parking decals during OLLI office hours (8 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday) and that picking up decals early will save you some time on registration day. You may also click here to read the catalog online. Registration will take place Tuesday, August 18, beginning by 8 am (although many of our members do arrive early).

Many people commented that they were looking forward to "getting back to class."  Some had taken the summer off to travel, and others were anxious for class to begin again after less than a week away. These enthusiastic comments remind us that OLLI and the Reuter Center serve many purposes for our members. For our many member/volunteers, OLLI is a place to stay engaged by giving back, a place to teach courses or serve on the many committees that keep us running. Others attend courses or participate in special interest groups to see the world with new eyes or to be with people who share intellectual curiosity.  For all of us, this is a community where we all have the opportunity to contribute to the success of what we do.

As we gear up for another fall season of courses, we should take a moment to remember the unique environment that draws us all together. We appreciate the passion each of you brings to your creative retirement,

Catherine Frank
Executive Director

Volunteer Opportunity

From September 19 to November 7, 2015, the Asheville YMI Cultural Center will host a traveling exhibition of 52 portraits highlighting Americans who courageously address issues of social, environmental, and economic justice. OLLI at UNC Asheville will sponsor portraits of Frederick Douglass and Denise Giardina.

And, as OLLI members, you can become part of this historic exhibition.  Throughout the 43 days of the show, volunteers are needed to greet visitors, take tickets and act as docents to answer questions about this one-of-a-kind initiative from artist Robert Shetterly.
