Dear OLLI Members,
New College for Seniors Program Manager Herb Gunn, OLLI Steering Council past chair Judy LaMee, and I went to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, for the Southern Regional Meeting for Learning in Retirement, sponsored by OLLI at the University of Alabama, July 28-30. At these meetings we always learn some new approaches to ongoing concerns (different uses of technology, new ways to think about inclusion or annual giving) and enjoy seeing old colleagues and meeting new ones. It was particularly striking to me this year to note the ways that our programs are meeting the needs of more generations of learners. Some of the same people are attending the meetings who have been attending for years, but there are an increasing number of fresh faces.
It's a reminder to make sure that we understand the essential values of our programs and remain open to new ways of thinking. We want to continue to serve the lifelong learners who have given our programs vitality and also to be open to new ideas and new ways of learning.
We look forward to seeing you beginning on Friday, August 7, when our catalogs are first available for pick up. Those of you who are able to make it on Friday, August 7 from 9 am to noon will have the chance to meet our new College for Seniors program manager Herb Gunn and enjoy refreshments. You may pick the catalog up any time after August 7; it will also be posted online beginning on August 7. We will hold registration (first come, first served) August 18; expect an email with more details in a couple of weeks.
We appreciate the passion each of you brings to your creative retirement,
Catherine Frank
Executive Director

Astronomy Club of Asheville Meeting
Thursday, August 6, 7 pm
Galileo's Fingers - A Photographic Exploration of Antique Scientific Instruments
Presented by Rick Boozer, astrophysics researcher, public speaker, and author Rick recently visited the Museo Galileo in Florence, Italy, and will present a guided photographic tour of this museum dedicated to the pioneering (and controversial!) seventeenth-century scientist and father of modern observational astronomy, Galileo Galilei. In addition to exhibiting many scientific instruments dating back over a thousand years, the museum displays two telescopes fabricated by the man himself and used to radically change our perception of the world.
Why "Galileo's Fingers?" Among the many unique and fascinating antique telescopes, celestial globes, astrolabes, armillary spheres and other scientific instruments, the museum has preserved in ornate glass bell jars... two of Galileo's fingers!
Scheduled in the Manheimer Room, this event is free and open to the public.
