Dear OLLI Members,
Our summer College for Seniors courses are winding down, but we are busy working on the fall catalog, which will first be available to pick up on August 7.  You may pick up a catalog any time, but we will have light refreshments from 9 am to 12 noon to celebrate the arrival of the catalogs. If you cannot make it to the Reuter Center any time before registering for the fall term and you do not use the online catalog, please contact Jessika Bond at 828-251-6140 to explore your options.

We hope you will read the article by Lynn Sellers on Linda Orowitz, who loves to share her passion for Asheville with OLLI members and through her volunteer work with a variety of local organizations.

Speaking of volunteers, please note that we need volunteers for our front desk and that our Civic Engagement Committee has opportunities to join other OLLI members for work at MANNA Food Bank. OLLI runs on volunteer time and talent, and we appreciate the many people who make our programming possible.

We appreciate the passion each of you brings to your creative retirement,
Catherine Frank
Executive Director

One Woman's Love Affair with Asheville
Inspires Others

by Lynn Sellers

What does it look like to love Asheville?  If you are Linda Orowitz, it's like diving into a clear blue ocean of possibility.  It's curiosity that explores what's there for the sheer delight of experiencing it.  It's the quintessential teacher eager to share what she knows with others. Asheville is a passion for Linda Orowitz.

So, who is Linda Orowitz?  Linda is that flash of energy you might pass in the halls of the Reuter Center.  She's the leader of walking tours who guides folks to take in Asheville's art deco.  She's a conduit of Asheville Visitor Center brochures that inspire newcomers and long-time residents to connect with Asheville.

Native Pennsylvanians, Linda and her husband Lee visited Asheville six times before they relocated here.  Lee saw an article in Where to Retire magazine about OLLI's Creative Relocation Exploration Weekend (CREW.)  They decided that workshop was a good reason to come and check out the area in 2007.

Read Aloud to Children- Spread the Joy!

Do you love to read? Do you like children? The Buncombe County Public Library's Preschool Outreach Project (POP) is currently looking for volunteers! POP is an outreach service of the library, a program designed to bring the joy and excitement of books to children in child care centers.

The children we serve are often unable to attend story time programs in their local library, and so we bring the very best the library has to offer straight to them. Our volunteers offer stories, songs, puppets and smiles to our youngest book lovers- children under the age of 5.

No formal experience is needed, just a strong commitment to both children and reading. Most volunteers spend approximately five hours per month on POP, reading twice a month at their assigned center. We ask that volunteers commit to participate with our program for one full school year. All story time materials are provided by the library.

All POP volunteers must participate in a one day training event before being assigned to a local child care center. Our next training will be in September.

Interested volunteers must contact the program coordinator and complete a volunteer application prior to training.  Click here to find an application online.
