Highlight Concert

The Summer Young Artists of Asheville Lyric Opera (ALO) will perform a collection of opera highlights, art song, and classical pieces they have worked on during their summer study program. The young artists come to Asheville from around the country and participate in an intensive program for six weeks to develop their singing, acting, dancing, and performing skills.

They range from young professionals to students, and they participate in ALO's summer productions and perform extensively around the Western North Carolina region.

This is a wonderful opportunity to hear these young artists in an intimate setting.  This event is free and open to the public.

Dear OLLI Members,

We are excited to welcome our new College for Seniors program manager Herb Gunn to his first week in the Reuter Center.  Herb will be in the upper lobby during class changes from 11 to 11:30 and 1:30 to 2 Monday through Thursday.  We hope you will take the time to greet Herb and make him feel at home.

Remember that we still need volunteers for our Membership Social on July 15 and there are volunteer opportunities offered through the Asheville City Schools' Read to Succeed program.  And as always, please remember that OLLI offers many volunteer opportunities throughout the year.  And if you are interested in teaching for the College for Seniors' Winter 2016 term or know someone who wants to share a passion, remember the deadline is July 15.  Click here to learn more about teaching in the College for Seniors.

We appreciate the passion each of you brings to your creative retirement,

Volunteer Opportunity

Read To Succeed Asheville (R2S) Reading Coaches and Buddies meet with K through third grade students for one-on-one tutoring sessions throughout the school year. Coaches undergo four weeks of training in our multi-sensory, phonics-based program. Buddy training is less rigorous and prepares volunteers to teach reading comprehension, spelling, and rhyming. Both work with children from low-literacy homes in the Asheville City school system.

The benefits are mutual. From one coach: "I just finished my fourth year with R2S, and I love the progress I see with these students.  (I've had three!)  This program works!  This year, my new first grader couldn't read a word in September, and when I assessed her in June with the same story, she only missed 3 words out of 72!  If you want a rewarding, heart-warming, literacy volunteer experience, volunteer with Read to Succeed!"

Coach training is conducted twice each year, in August/September and February/March. Buddy training is held throughout the year. For more information, please visit our website at
r2sasheville.org, or email us at [email protected] or contact Julie Sherman, volunteer coordinator, 828-251-4949.

Elders Fierce for Justice
Inter-generational Conversation on Climate Change

A joining of generations  happened at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute on March 26, 2015. The young generation, from UNC Asheville, and the older generation, a group of activists in the Asheville area, came together to discuss the important topic of climate change.

This is part one in a series of discussions, hosted by Elders Fierce for Justice, to ask important questions and find out how these two different age groups might see the world as it approaches this crucial time where action must be taken.
