THE VANISHING POINT,
by Nedra Roberts,
directed by Beth Ely
Tickets - $6.00 at the door, (includes North Carolina sales tax)
Trouble aplenty brews in southern Louisiana just before Hurricane Katrina. Not only is the coastline at grave environmental risk, but the St. Pe family is at risk of falling apart. Estranged son, Pierre St. Pe, an environmental engineer, returns home to deal with both his father, a fisherman bound to the old Cajun ways he's always followed, and his brother who is now romantically linked with Pierre's former girlfriend. The ending takes us to new possibilities, both for the environment, and for easing inter-generational conflict in a tumultuously changing world.

Dear OLLI Members,
Although summer is a more relaxed term for OLLI, we hope you will take advantage of some of the unique programming we continue to offer. Today, Sunday, June 28 at 2:30 pm, you can enjoy a performance by the Autumn Players. Next Sunday you can take part in a unique workshop from MOTION Dance Theatre founder Nick Kepley, and on July 17, enjoy performances by young singers studying in the Asheville Lyric Opera's Summer Opera Program. These programs are in addition to our summer workshops and College for Seniors courses.
The talent of our members is on display in this newsletter. You can also view excerpts from an intergenerational conversation on climate change that took place earlier this year. We hope this video will prompt your own thinking about ways to convene meaningful conversations about important subjects; contact OLLI member Steve Kaagan if you would like to know more about how to be engaged in future conversations. Carol Gillen's article about "The Art of Being Relevant" reminds us of the challenge and rewards of taking responsibility to connect with the world around us to stay engaged and active.
If you are looking for opportunities to stay relevant, please note that UNC Asheville's Department of Management and Financial Accountancy is looking for qualified adjunct professors. Pisgah Legal Services is looking for volunteers to help others navigate the affordable care act. Right here at OLLI, we need people to help with the member social on July 15 and are eager for more teachers for our Winter 2016 term of the College for Seniors (deadline is July 15). Please see Laurel Jernigan or Jessika Bond if you would like to explore other ways to serve at OLLI.
We appreciate the passion each of you brings to your creative retirement,
Catherine Frank
Executive Director

The Art of Being Relevant...Again!
By Carol Gillen
When my husband, Marty, and I moved to Asheville from Miami in 2007, we were friendly with a couple who moved up here at around the same time as they lived down the street from us in our former home. Both he and his wife were semi-retired but worked in a food-related business from their home in North Asheville. During the four years or so that they lived here, they rarely socialized, never engaged the greater Asheville community, and did not volunteer or interact at all with the locals.
It did not take long for them to declare that Asheville was an unfriendly place and that they did not feel relevant to the community or good about their role here, and they soon moved on. I remember saying to them, "No one is going to come knocking at your door; you need to put out the effort to get involved."

OLLI at UNC Asheville has been contacted by researchers from the University of of Tubingen, Germany, to have our members participate in an international Silverlearning Study to investigate the formal lifelong learning behavior of mature adults in the U.S . and Germany. This topic has received little scientific attention thus far and, keeping our aging society in mind, much more research is needed to prepare for future educational challenges.
The study addresses learners age 65 and older who are currently taking or auditing courses/lectures (non-credit or for-credit) or who are otherwise involved in an organized learning experience.
We have been assured that this survey is completely anonymous and 100% non-commercial. All research records will be at all times strictly confidential. At no point will any research material of participants be released to any third party. The only use of the collected data is for statistical evaluation. Your participation is strictly voluntary.
