Did you know that seeing  is an important part of hearing? This is true in the sense that we all develop awareness of visual cues to aid our hearing. Gestures, the shape of our mouths as we speak, body language, all help us to interpret speech more accurately. Learn more about communication issues and hearing loss at the June meeting of the Asheville chapter of the Healing Loss Association of America.

Dear OLLI Members,

We look forward to seeing you back at the Reuter Center tomorrow, Monday, June 15.  Despite our problems with catalog delivery, we managed to have a robust enrollment for summer courses, so the Reuter Center will be a lively place during these warm days. If you would like to find out where your class or meeting is being held, click here to find the daily schedule of room assignments. As always, there will be people to greet you and guide you to your classroom when you arrive. There are still open classes; remember that you may add as many courses as you can schedule.

We hope that you will take advantage of the Advance Care Planning Workshop this Wednesday, June 17.  There will be experts on hand to answer questions and notaries to make your directives "official."

Also, we hope you will enjoy lecture/performances at the Reuter Center by the Montford Park Players and members of the Asheville Lyric Opera this Friday, June 19, and the return of UNC Asheville's Concerts on the Quad this Monday, June 15. While we may see summer as a quieter time, there is still plenty to learn and savor.

We appreciate the passion each of you brings to your creative retirement,

Catherine Frank
Executive Director

Silverlearning Survey

OLLI at UNC Asheville has been contacted by researchers from the University of of Tubingen, Germany, to have our members participate in an international Silverlearning Study to investigate the formal lifelong learning behavior of mature adults in the U.S. and Germany. This topic has received little scientific attention thus far and, keeping our aging society imind, much more research is needed to prepare for future educational challenges.

For more information about the survey, click here to visit the Silverlearning website.

The study addresses learners age 65 and older who are currently taking or auditing courses/lectures (non-credit or for-credit) or who are otherwise involved in an organized learning experience.

With increasing life expectancies and changing educational landscapes, this international comparative study can make a meaningful scientific contribution
to the American and European lifelong learning landscape.

We have been assured that this survey is completely anonymous and 100% non-commercial. All research records will be at all times strictly confidential. At no point will any research material of participants be released to any third party. The only use of the collected data is for statistical evaluation. Your participation is strictly voluntary.

The Asheville History Center
is pleased to announce its  exhibition:
"Bartram's Journey; The 1775 Journey of
William Bartram to Western North Carolina."

The exhibition runs through the end of October.

The exhibition will examine Bartram's expedition during which he collected plant specimens, created illustrations of local flora and fauna, and interacted with the Cherokee Indians. These experiences were related in his late 1780s book "Travels Through North and South Carolina, East and West Florida . . . Containing An Account of the Soil and Natural Productions of Those Regions."

The exhibition will also include artwork inspired by nature by Asheville area artists as well as native mammals prepared by local taxidermists.   Related programing and special events during the exhibition will highlight Bartram's connection to both the natural world and Western North Carolina. Visit www.wnchistory.org for further information.
