It seems as if our summer catalogs are finally making it to your mailboxes. We will be making different plans for the distribution of our fall catalogs to make sure that we do not face the same problems that resulted from a change in the way bulk mail in our area is processed. We had a relatively small turnout for the registration on May 19, so we encourage you to look at the catalog (either a print copy or by clicking here to read the online catalog) and to enrich your summer by choosing one of our enticing offerings, either in the College for Seniors or Workshops program. Also remember that our community partners continue their offerings throughout the summer, so we have a variety of special events to enjoy.
We hope you will take some time to read Kirk Borland's excellent story about one of OLLI's unsung heroes, John Hammond. John has worked with members of the OLLI marketing committee on the stories about OLLI members and committees that enrich the website and newsletter. Thanks to John and Kirk for capturing the many stories of our thriving membership.
Also remember that the Reuter Center will be closed tomorrow, Monday, May 25, in observance of Memorial Day. We will also be closed Friday, June 5, as we conduct our Creative Retirement Exploration Weekend, which welcomes people from all over the country to help them sort out all of the issues that come with relocation in retirement.
We appreciate the passion each of you brings to your creative retirement,
Catherine Frank
Executive Director

John Hammond: The Man Behind The Curtain
By Kirk Borland
Up on the hill at OLLI's Reuter Center, a man is living the "OLLI life" -- attending classes and serving on one of the many committees, always ready to quietly pitch in when extra hands are needed, but never seeking the spotlight. He is emblematic of that often silent army of members who give generously of their time and without whose help our institute could not function as well as it does. That man is John Hammond, a member of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at UNC Asheville since 2010.
John spent his professional life working for non-profits, mostly in Buffalo, until his last position took him to the metropolitan New York City area. He might have followed a marketing career, but when Nestle didn't come through with the entry-level position he was seeking, John decided to do post-graduate work in the emerging field of data processing -- a decision that launched him into the world of computers. Of course, as John says, "Computers in those days were the size of a small house!"

The Civic Engagement Committee Needs YOU! The Civic Engagement Committee (the community volunteer arm of OLLI) is looking for a committee secretary. We use detailed agendas, so taking minutes is less cumbersome. We meet monthly at the Reuter Center, and the meetings usually last an hour. The committee has been connecting OLLI Volunteers with exciting opportunities to battle hunger and food insecurity by working with area nonprofits and to volunteer in the Asheville City Schools. Having more members will allow us to pursue more opportunities for OLLI members to join together to make a difference in the larger community.
Please consider joining the
Civic Engagement Committee as secretary! Send any questions about the committee and the secretary position to sarahreincke@gmail.com
