Meditation SIG

At the May 11th meeting of the Meditation Special Interest Group (SIG) the guest speaker is Ronya Banks.  Ms. Banks is the owner of Insight Meditation Institute.  She has been from big business to having a special relationship with meditation and has an interesting story.

Because of Memorial Day on the fourth Monday of May we are starting our summer schedule this month.  May, June, July and August we will meet once monthly on the 2nd Monday of each month and all meetings will be in room 102B.  OLLI membership is required to participate.

Join the Western Carolina Reed Trio on May 12, 9:30 a.m. - 11 a.m. in the Manheimer Room, for conversation and a special live performance of music by Corelli, Cantaloube and Mozart. We will explore the progressive use of popular tunes and influences in a classical music setting.  Join OLLI's Mozart:  His Life and  Music series instructor Dr. Alicia Chapman and friends, Dr. Will Peebles, bassoon, and Dr. Shannon Thompson, clarinet, for a delightful celebration of Spring and music.

New Bridge SIG!

 A new Special Interest Group (SIG) for bridge players is now forming.  It will be called "Bridge for Fun."  The purpose of the new SIG is to give new and intermediate bridge players an opportunity to play and learn in a positive and encouraging atmosphere. 

An organizational meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 12, at 11:30 am in Room 206 in the Reuter Center.

Council on Aging of Buncombe County 
Hosts Annual 
Successful Aging 2015!

Sherrill Center and Kimmel Arena
Successful Aging is a day-long event for older adults, caregivers, and anyone who is interested in aging successfully. This year's classes include t'ai chi, beer tasting, smart phone tips, moving meditation, speed dating, energy healing, reverse mortgages, and expressive drawing.  Presenters include the YMCA of WNC, the Yoga Wellness Center, Asheville Savings Bank,, and Dragon Phoenix T'ai Chi.

SIG The Forum

New Wine Tasting SIG Meeting

The newly formed Wine Tasting SIG is seeking additional members!  If you are interested, please contact Hooker Wood at

This new group invites to come to a tasting and discover worlds of new wine facts!  The focus of the May 16th tasting will be Australian wines. 

Tastings will rotate to members' homes and other venues.

Hearing Loss Association Chapter Meeting

Storytelling SIG


The OLLI Storytelling SIG will meet  Tuesday May 19, 5:30 pm  at Hana restaurant for dinner and storytelling. Hana is located at 5B Biltmore Avenue just doors from Posana Restaurant.  Garage parking across street and at Aloft.

Senior Softball Returns! 
 Senior softball will start back up in late April to early May. Finish your spring College for Seniors classes and join us on the diamond at Weaver Park.  (Behind Luella's BBQ on Murdock Road. ) 
We had a good inaugural season last year.  We want to build on that this year.  We have bats, balls, and gloves, so if you don't have any , you can use what we have.

The OLLI Summer 2015 Catalog is now available online; click on this link to view the catalog. You can find a registration form if you click here. Print catalogs were mailed on Friday, and we will have print catalogs available in the OLLI office on Tuesday, May 12.

We have an active week filled with SIG meetings, lectures, and performances. We hope you will consider coming to the Reuter Center Wednesday, May 13, 1:30 pm, to be part of the group photo that we will use as the front cover for our catalogs beginning in Fall 2015. Be one of the faces of OLLI for the coming year and help us illustrate the active, engaging environment you create at our organization.

Lungs in Health and Disease, Part 2 
by David Mouw, PhD, MD

After a brief review of Part I (see OLLI web site "presentations" for 10/31/14 PowerPoint slides), you will learn about additional lung functions and related diseases. Why does heart disease make your lungs gurgle? What's so difficult about transporting oxygen? Why are there normally soap bubbles in the lungs? How can deep breathing cause fainting? What causes lungs to collapse without
 deep breaths? Which productive coughs require antibiotics? Why does a person with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have large lungs but diminished lung function?  

David Mouw, PhD (human physiology), MD (family practice) with added Qualification in Geriatrics, has given ten previous HES lectures, and regularly uses the audience response system. This presentation is part of the Health Education Series and is free and open to the public. 
Opera Talk
How Can Anybody Sing? 
Friday, May 15, 3 pm.
Reuter Center's Manheimer Room

  You may have asked yourself, what's the difference between a person who sings in the shower and an opera singer performing on the stage?

 In this lecture David Craig Starkey, Asheville Lyric Opera's general and artistic director, will discuss the differences between singing professionally and singing for pleasure. Let us answer the question, how can anybody sing?

This lecture is free and open to the public.

Saving the Cerulean Warbler: 
 American Bird Conservancy Initiatives in Latin America 
 by Benjamin Skolnik


 Benjamin Skolnik, director of international program development for the American Bird Conservancy, (ABC) will discuss the accomplishments of the Cerulean Warbler Corridor project to date and provide an overview of the many activities underway in Colombia. He will also discuss the broader context of protecting migratory and threatened resident avian species in Latin America and provide a snapshot of some of the hot global debates regarding biodiversity policy where ABC is actively making a difference for birds.

Benjamin received his MS in the sustainable development and conservation biology program at the University of Maryland. He was a Peace Corps volunteer in a high Andean village in Ancash, Peru, where he worked on community initiatives, including providing technical assistance in watershed conservation activities.

Volunteer Opportunity     

Volunteer to serve free lunches to children this summer
Volunteers are needed for free lunch distribution through Buncombe County Schools for low income sites Monday through Friday, June 15-August 7 for about 2 hours in a day.  You can volunteer for one time only or for as many times as you can.

Are you a forest landowner in western North Carolina? Do you want to learn how to sustainably manage your land to enjoy it for years to come? You're in luck, the Woodland Steward Series: 2015 Mountains Program is being offered this summer!

The Woodland Steward Series is designed to empower forest landowners to manage their properties to promote environmental and forest health through increased awareness, experience and access to resources.  The series takes place between July 29th and August 21st at various locations in the Asheville area.
