Dear OLLI Members,
OLLI runs on the talent, creativity, and generosity of our members.  Whether they teach courses, organize the curriculum, serve as liaisons with our community partners,or offer their volunteer service to community organizations, our OLLI volunteers inspire and energize us with a vision of the possibilities of creative retirement. This newsletter reminds us of the many ways our members "give back" both here at the Reuter Center and in the broader community.

Please enjoy the second part of Lynn Sellers' story on OLLI members Lee Orowitz and Kitty Schaller, who volunteer at the Verner Center and exemplify the spirit of "giving back."

If you or someone you know would like to sharpen skills in crafting presentations or using OLLI's AV equipment for teaching in the College for Seniors, please see the information about Tech Talks sponsored by the College or Seniors Curriculum Committee.

If you are not already volunteering or engaged with community groups, this newsletter suggests a variety of opportunities to explore.  If you would like to explore opportunities at OLLI, please contact Jessika Bond ([email protected]) or Laurel Jernigan ([email protected]), OLLI staff members who will be happy to talk to you about how to get engaged in a way that meets your needs.

We appreciate the passion each of you brings to your creative retirement,
Catherine Frank

The outcome of opinions issued by the United States Supreme Court from the controversies presented to it has a tremendous impact on the lives of each and every person in this country. Judge Carl Peterson will assess the potential impact, of significant opinions that were published by the US Supreme Court in the October 2013-2014 term and in the current term to date. The discussion will include the controversies that remain pending and will likely be resolved by the Court by the end of the session in June 2015. Carl Peterson is a retired trial judge with experience as a prosecutor, twenty years as a practicing lawyer, and twenty years on the trial bench. He has provided numerous classes and seminars on the US Supreme Court and landmark cases decided by this court.

OLLI Volunteers: Find Joy and Make a Difference

Part 2: Rewards and Advice for Volunteers

By Lynn Sellers

Part 1 of this story introduced you to two outstanding volunteers (Lee Orowitz and Kitty Schaller) from OLLI at UNC Asheville. Lee, a career podiatrist, volunteers at Verner Center for Early Learning. With a lifelong commitment to charitable solutions to hunger, Kitty currently guides fundraising for Verner Center and helps people navigate healthcare through Pisgah Legal Services. In Part 2, you will learn from them rewards and advice for volunteers...in their own words.

Though they connected with their volunteer assignments via different paths, and make different contributions, Lee Orowitz and Kitty Schaller enthusiastically describe many rewards of volunteering.

Lee says:

When I open the classroom door first thing in the morning, the kids rush toward me, yelling "Mr. Lee!" First they grab my legs, almost knocking me down, and then they hug me. Their bright eyes and loving faces make me smile like no other time during my week. This is truly a volunteer opportunity where I get more than I give. I treasure these three hours every week and never miss.

Kids are so untainted, full of life and vitality. They make me smile and I'm not a smiling kind of guy.  The staff thanks me constantly. They do not take me for granted. I am learning so much. I feel like a better human being and a better citizen.

Volunteering has changed me. I used to be very egocentric. Now, I am more open, mindful, and authentic. I'm less critical. I'm the real me. I have money. I have time. I wanted to give back.

When I first got to Asheville, I did so much to get acquainted with what was here.  Then, I wanted more substance. I don't like small talk. I want to talk to people and learn who they are.
