Storying Symposium
Friday, April 17,
Beginning at 12 pm
UNC Asheville's
Whitman Room
in Ramsey Library
OLLI members are welcome at an afternoon symposium on the many important ways that stories express and shape our lives and ways of knowing. People both tell stories and utilize them in the processes of understanding the world and making knowledge. Our project shows, in a variety of ways, how a method familiar in the humanities--narrative--is important and effective also in disciplines other than humanities, as well as in the lives of "ordinary people" for both knowledge making and producing a coherent sense of a life/lived experience.
Everyone is welcome for all or part of the symposium and it is free and open to the public.  If you wish to join us for the lunch session, please RSVP for lunch to Alice Weldon by emailing aweldon@unca.edu by Wednesday, April 15, and indicate any dietary restrictions you have.

An Episcopal Retirement Community

Asheville, NC 28803

CREW helps those considering relocation in retirement examine all their options carefully and make an informed decision about this major life transition.
Dear OLLI Members,
This is a busy time at the Reuter Center as classes are in full swing, as we prepare for the summer term (look for the link in next week's newsletter to a preview of summer classes) and as we host our ongoing special events with community partners.

Please remember that this Friday (April 17) we begin our Paths to Creative Retirement spring workshop. This means that the Reuter Center is closed to all other activities and classes, including College for Seniors courses, Special Interest Groups (SIGs), and Fab Fridays.

The Paths program is a workshop that helps people make the transition from work to retirement and attracts people from across the country. The program also attracts the attention of the national press (we have had mention in
The New York Times, Consumer Reports Money Advisor, Moneyand Kiplingers just this past year) in a way that highlights the many things that make our program unique and innovative. Participants particularly value the opportunity to learn from our members who serve as facilitators in the process of helping attendees develop strategies that lead to a successful and creative retirement.  We have so many members who are great models of creative retirement, and we want to thank them for helping the program evolve to meet the changing needs of all of us in life's second half.
We also wanted to let you know that we will be sending out letters for the spring campaign for our annual fund some time this week. The annual fund supports scholarships and programs and allows us to improve the experience of all OLLI members by making possible purchases that are not covered by our endowments or operating fees. If OLLI enriches your life, we hope that you will consider a donation.

We appreciate the passion each of you brings to your creative retirement,
Catherine Frank
Executive Director

OLLI changed my life...
We had moved to Asheville 20 years ago
Lisette deGroot
this month. I first took some classes offered by the College for Seniors at First Baptist Church, then classes were given in different buildings on the UNC Asheville campus. It is and has been a joy to come to classes at the Reuter Center.

OLLI has made a difference in my life by...
helping me meet new people as well as keeping me busy and entertained. Last but not least: learning new things.

What OLLI means to me...
OLLI gives me the opportunity to visit with others.  It really fills my life.

Else Lasker-Schüler:
"The Poet of Crossing Boundaries"
Tuesday, April 21, 7 pm

Evenings at the Cabaret Weimar is a series sponsored by the Center for Jewish Studies and OLLI that focuses on Jewish life in Germany between the world wars.

On April 21, this series welcomes University of British Columbia (Canada) professor Markus Hallensleben, who will explain why expressionist artist and writer, Else Lasker-Schüler, was "The Poet of Crossing Boundaries." Noted for her gender-defying costumes and avant-garde literary style, the long-forgotten Lasker-Schüler is being rediscovered in light of new scholarship.

This presentation is free and open to the public.
Fab Friday Lecture
Friday, April 24, 2015, 11:30 am
Africa: A Photo Journey by Bob and Ulana Mellor

The Mellors are OLLI members and retired software designers and developers and have enjoyed taking nature-oriented photographic and educational trips around the world for over thirty years. During the winter of 2014 they spent three weeks fulfilling a twenty-five year desire to participate in an African safari photographing the wildlife of Kenya and Tanzania with a small group of like-minded people.

Their slide presentation will highlight images of the different species and behaviors they saw, what a typical safari day was like, a Maasai village visit, and some of the planning required for such an adventure.
This presentation is free and open to the public.
