World Affairs Council "Russia and the Near Abroad" by Steve Solnick, President, Warren Wilson College Monday, April 6, 7:30 pmAs calls for closer ties with the EU failed to be met, Ukrainians took to the streets in in November 2013. As the movement later known as the Euromaidan or "Euro Square" pulled western Ukraine closer to its European neighbors, another powerful force threatened to tear away the country's eastern half: Russia. Putin's pushback against European expansionism has the West wondering: If Putin's Russia isn't afraid to take an aggressive stance against Europeanization in Ukraine, what does that mean for the rest of Russia's neighbors? What are we to make of Putin's relationship with Russia's oligarchs as world-wide oil prices plummet and the value of the ruble diminishes. Free admission for WAC members and students; $10 general public. For more details about programs, consult the WAC website. This event was originally scheduled for February 24 and has been rescheduled to this date in response to adverse weather.

Thanks to everyone who attended the Town Hall Meeting last Tuesday. We will be posting the presentation on our website for those of you interested in the "state of OLLI" after a year of great change and great achievement (watch for a link in next week's email). If you would like to read more about the people identified as our volunteer leaders for the OLLI Steering Council for next year or to weigh in, please click here for a link to this year's ballot.
C lick on this link to find the posting seeking a program manager for the College for Seniors. Please pass the link along if you know of anyone who has great warmth, a passion for lifelong learning, and flexibility and creativity to nurture past success and respond to the evolving needs of participants in our signature program, the College for Seniors. Susan Poole will be a hard act to follow; we hope she is enjoying being a participant and enjoying the many wonderful classes she has helped to foster.
If you would like to contribute to the success of the College for Seniors, you don't have to go back to work. Tuesday through Thursday this week, representatives from our curriculum committee will be in the upper and lower lobbies to answer your questions about teaching or being a College for Seniors volunteer (please exact times in the posting elsewhere in the newsletter). If you want to find out more but won't be at the Reuter Center during those times, just respond to this email, and we will help you discover your opportunities here at OLLI.
