Dear OLLI Members,
We look forward to the beginning of spring term College for Seniors and for our special events to begin again. Please remember that our curriculum committee works hard to put together a balanced curriculum ,and our instructors spend hundreds of hours putting their courses together. Your regular attendance is a critical element of our success; if you are unable to attend a course for any reason, please contact the office to drop the course. We have some courses with significant waiting lists, and it is very frustrating to those who were unable to enroll to walk by a classroom and see unused seats.
Please remember that on Wednesday, March 25, we honor Susan Poole on the occasion of her retirement. We anticipate a large crowd, so please be patient as we try to accommodate all of the people who want to thank Susan for the many ways she has improved our community.
We appreciate the passion each of you brings to your creative retirement,
Catherine Frank
Executive Director

Fab Friday Lecture
"Nightmare vs Reality: A World without Antibiotics"
by Jacie Volkman, MPH, CIC
Friday, March 27, 11:30 am
Can you imagine a world without antibiotics,
where people die of urinary tract infections, sinus infections, or complications from simple surgeries? Modern-day bacteria have learned how to outsmart antibiotics, the only weapons we have to fight them. Multi-drug resistant organisms, also known as super bugs, have the capacity to overtake chronic disease as the leading cause of mortality, and it is just around the corner. How can we protect ourselves?
Come learn about what you can do to help stop this fast moving train. Jacie Volkman is the Director of Infection Prevention at Mission Health System and the owner of Safe Patient Surveys, an infection prevention consulting company. She is also a member of the board of directors for the Association for Practitioners in Infection Control and Epidemiology.
This presentation is part of the
Health Education Series and is free and open to the public.

An Inter-Generational Conversation on Climate Change
Thursday, March 26, 3-4:30 pm
Reuter Center, Room 102B
First in a Series
We are the first generation to feel the sting of climate change and the last generation that may have the opportunity to make a difference. Given the immediacy of this challenge, it is appropriate for those representing a wide span of ages and viewpoints to explore both meaning and responsibility with regard to climate change. We invite you to participate in a moderated inter- generational panel discussion,as a special event of Greenfest, jointly sponsored by UNCA/SGA and OLLI.
Elders associated with the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute and UNC Asheville students will be the main conversationalists. Others will join as observers and questioners.
Panelists, chosen on a first come first serve basis, will address topics/questions suggested by those who sign up ahead of time. Firm commitments from all, including observers, are necessary as there may be more who want to attend than the room will hold . We plan to film the conversation and edit it down to a shorter YouTube video. UNC Asheville students will do the filming and editing. To sign up as a panel participant or observer, contact: Jenn Preston, jpreston@unca.edu
