Join us for an evening of stories honoring the strong women in the lives of our raconteurs. 

OLLI Director, Catherine Frank and Jim Stokely, son of Wilma Dykeman will join Roy Harris, President of the Asheville Storytelling Circle, Sherry Lovett, professional storyteller, and OLLI Stories For the Third Act tellers Sarah Larson, David Castel, Karen Schwartz, and Shay Thames.
A suggested donation of $10 per person will be collected at the door.  Please plan on arriving by 7 pm for best seating.

  The Sierra Club of Western North Carolina will  present a " North Carolina Legislative Environmental Update: The Good, the Bad, the Ugly" with our  NC state Sierra Club lobbyist in Raleigh, and Julie Mayfield, co-director of Mountain True.  Solar energy, fracking, coal ash, water quality, offshore wind, and offshore drilling will be discussed.  Learn what you can do to help.  
Blue Ridge Orchestra Concert

The Blue Ridge Orchestra's contribution to Asheville Amadeus is a delightful program of excerpts from some of Mozart's most brilliant works.  Under the baton of Music Director Milton Crotts, the genius of Mozart comes alive in a concert suitable for families and music lovers at all levels of sophistication.  
The program will include the Impresario Overture and the first movement of his Symphony No. 40, followed by movements from the Clarinet and Bassoon concertos.  After the final movement of Symphony No. 40 and the Allegro from Piano Concerto No. 23, the concert ends with Mozart's playful variations on the theme of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.

Dear OLLI Members,
If you signed up for spring College for Seniors courses, you should have received a copy of your schedule last Monday (March 9). You will receive an updated schedule of courses tomorrow  (Monday, March 16) if you have enrolled and participated in the add/drop process.  Remember that you may apply for a full refund for CFS spring term fees up until 3 pm, Friday, March 20. 

If you are a new member or just want to find out how to make the most of your OLLI experience, please plan to join us at 10 am on Friday, March 20, for our New Member Welcome in the Reuter Center's Manheimer Room.  And mark your calendars to attend the Town Hall Meeting on Tuesday, March 31, 4:30 pm to talk about the achievements and challenges of the year behind us and the year to come.

We are excited to take part in the Asheville Amadeus events and hope you will be able to make time to learn more about Mozart through the Meeting Mozart presentation and performance by members of the Asheville Symphony Orchestra on Wednesday, March 18, at the Reuter Center, the Mozart March Madness performance at Asheville's First Baptist Church on Thursday, March 19 (which includes our own Reuter Center Singers), and the Blue Ridge Orchestra's Mozart Family Concerts on Saturday, March 21.  You can find more details in this newsletter about each of these activities sponsored by our OLLI community partners. It's exciting to be part of this festival that showcases the talent that enlivens our community every day of the year and that also brings great performers to Western North Carolina.

OLLI Town Hall Meeting

Please join us Tuesday, March 31, 4:30 pm in the Manheimer Room for our annual Town Hall meeting. We'll hit the past year's highlights including member survey results and accomplishments from our OLLI programs and activities. The Nominating Committee will introduce the 2015-2016 slate of candidates. Light refreshments will be served. You are encouraged to bring your questions for our staff and Steering Council.

Audubon Society Meeting

Though most people think of the Blue Ridge Parkway as a long road  with beautiful views, it's much more than that. With more than two hundred species of birds, almost one hundred fish species and 2000+ different vascular  plants, it is one of the most biologically diverse units of the National  Park Service.

Bob Cherry, wildlife biologist for the Blue Ridge Parkway, will share the latest information on the Parkway's increasing list of  wildlife and talk about the natural systems they depend on to survive. Join him to learn why the Blue Ridge Parkway is more than just a road.

Meeting Mozart!
Wednesday, March 18, 10 am-12 pm OR 2-4 pm

As a part of the Asheville Amadeus Festival, in cooperation with the Asheville Symphony Orchestra (ASO), OLLI is hosting two lectures titled "Meeting Mozart: His Life and Music." Learn about Mozart through historical background, lively discussion and by ASO guest musician's performance led by Alicia Chapman, ASO oboist and lecturer. Scheduled in the Manheimer Room for Wednesday, March 18, attend either the 10 am - 12 pm session or the 2 - 4 pm session (the content for the two sessions is identical).
Free and open to the public.

Sam Hill Lecture:  "Crossing the Color Line"

Please plan to attend the 2015 Sam Hill Lecture in Southern Religion "Crossing the Color Line: Tracing Burdens of Religious 'Difference' from Africa to Appalachia" by Dr. Dianne Stewart, associate professor of religion and African American studies at Emory University, and Ms. Meredith Doster, PhD student at Emory University.   This event is free and open to the public.
The lecture is sponsored by the Department of Religious Studies with the generous support of the Mills Distinguished Speakers Fund.

UNC Asheville's literature and language department welcomes UNC Asheville alumna and New York Times best-selling author, Sarah Addison Allen. Sarah will be reading from her newest novel,
First Frost.
As described on her web site, her fiction combines "a captivating blend of magical realism, heartwarming romance, and small-town sensibility." She is the author of
Garden Spells (2007),
The Sugar Queen (2008),
The Girl Who Chased the Moon (2010),
The Peach Keeper (2011),
Lost Lake (2014) and
First Frost (2015).
Her work has been translated into thirty languages, and as her web site explains, two million of her books are now in print. Thanks to a generous fund established by the Dianna and Jeffrey Goodman family, we are excited to welcome Sarah back to UNC Asheville and hope you'll share this announcement with your students, family, and larger community.

 STEM Lecture
New Developments in Digital Dentistry

This lecture will present the revolutionary impact 
  
of digital technology on the field of dentistry. Specifically, we will discuss digital radiography (x-rays), CAD/CAM (CERC 3D), and cone beam technology.   There  will also be comments regarding the changes in restorative dentistry with our changing population.
The STEM Lecture Series is interdisciplinary, with a focus on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The upcoming lectures for the spring term are designed around the theme of new developments in STEM disciplines. This lecture is free and open to the public.

where people die of urinary tract infections, sinus infections, or complications from simple surgeries? Modern-day bacteria have learned how to outsmart antibiotics, the only weapons we have to fight them. Multi-drug resistant organisms, also known as super bugs, have the capacity to overtake chronic disease as the leading cause of mortality, and it is just around the corner. How can we protect ourselves? Come learn about what you can do to help stop this fast moving train. Jacie Volkman is the Director of Infection Prevention at Mission Health System and the owner of Safe Patient Surveys, an infection prevention consulting company. She is also a member of the board of directors for the Association for Practitioners in Infection Control and Epidemiology. 
This presentation is part of the Health Education Series and is free and open to the public.
  My Healthy Life Comes to OLLI!
This exciting wellness program provides the OLLI community with the chance to participate together in wellness and fitness challenges, activity tracking, health education, and more.  The first fifty participants will have the opportunity to sign up for a wearable fitness "pebble" and access to an online tracking system that can help you track your health habits and as a consequence stick with good behaviors.
