Dear OLLI Members,
We hope that you have all received your catalog for the upcoming term.  You may view the Spring 2015 catalog online by clicking this link. We will send out a separate email with details about registration on Tuesday, February 24.

Special thanks to Jeanne Smolkin and all of the people who helped make our Winter Membership Social such a great success.  Jeanne does an amazing job of organizing a team of people to put together events that create a great feeling of warmth and camaraderie.  We cannot thank her enough for the ways she helps us build community or for the hours and talents she brings to the task of providing such great food and drink.

We have another week of impressive special events planned as we wind up our College for Seniors winter courses.  Today Melodie Galloway's will offer a presentation "Inside the Music," about the Asheville Choral Society's upcoming performances. Special events continue on Monday with a presentation by hearing loop advocate Juliette Sterkens, a Tuesday evening presentation by the World Affairs Council, and on Thursday afternoon a STEM lecture on digital dentistry and one of our quarterly Advance Care Planning workshops. You can wrap up the week on Friday with a morning lecture by Dr. Darin Waters and Deborah Miles on slavery in Western North Carolina, a Fab Friday lecture on Florence, Italy, by College for Seniors "rock star" instructor Mark Smith, and an Opera Talk about food and wine in opera.  Mark your calendar to begin next week with a book talk next Sunday by Dr. Ron Manheimer about his new publication,Mirrors of the Mind: Reflecting on Philosophers' Autobiographies.

With such a great line up of events planned, we hate to miss anything, but we are expecting some cold and possibly snowy weather this week.  The best way
to find out about any weather related changes to the OLLI schedule is to watch your own email.  We follow the university's lead and cancel classes, events, and meetings when the university cancels for weather or other related emergencies. We will send an email announcement to all of our active members as soon as we make any decisions about weather cancellations.  We will, as soon as possible, put information on the OLLI website (olliasheville.com) and on our phone lines at 828-251-6140 and 828-251-6188.

Please remember that in making decisions about closings and delays that we try to balance our desire to provide learning with our concern for your safety.  Also remember that ours is a program of "learning for the love of it." If weather is unsafe where you are, please don't venture out.  While we may not be able to repeat every program, we will find ways to continue to provide imaginative and innovative programming for you to enjoy when it is safe for you to travel.

Stay warm and safe this week, study the wonderful learning opportunities provided by our curriculum committee for the spring term, and dream of the approach of spring,
Catherine Frank

AN  OPPORTUNITY  TO  LEARN  MORE  ABOUT  HEARING  LOOPS!
Monday, February 16, 7 pm
Reuter Center Manheimer Room
Juliette Sterkens
Dr. Juliette Sterkens, Wisconsin audiologist and national speaker, representing the Hearing Loss Association of America to promote the installation and use of hearing loops, will be paying Asheville a return visit on Monday, February 16, 7 pm, in the
Manheimer Room. This presentation and loop demonstration is free and open to the public.

Hearing loops enable access by people with hearing loss to amplified sound in all sorts of settings. There are two loops at the Reuter Center, in Room 102 and Room 206.  From the users' point of view, loops are the best and easiest of assistive listening devices. The Hearing Loss Association of America would like to see hearing loops installed in more Asheville venues.

If you wear hearing aids, in a looped setting you should be able to access amplified sound via the loop at the touch of a button or switch. That's because most hearing aids have a t-coil. If you aren't sure, you should check with your hearing aid provider. Some require activation.

"Privacy in the Digital Age"
by Jagdeep Bhandari, Mars Hill University
The idea of "privacy" has undergone significant changes in the digital age, as has the idea of privacy "harm." Fearful of British spying, influence and intervention, the founding fathers granted citizens significant protections in the Constitution. Now, the tables have turned. Concerns about what some see as a US "dragnet" and unwarranted privacy intrusions have compelled other countries to revamp their own privacy protections. Legislation, both at home and abroad, hasn't kept pace with technological developments, leaving some wondering if privacy as we know it is long dead.

Free admission for WAC members and students; $10 general public. For more details about programs, consult the WAC website.

Friday, February 20, 11:30 am

From food to sustainable tourism, Florence is in the midst of remarkable changes. The core culture of the city is confronted with challenges as basic as graffiti and as complex as managing the crush of thousands of tourists the city is ill prepared to manage. Mark Smith has explored different regions of Italy for over thirty-five years and is the author of three books about Italy. He is fluent in spoken Italian and has led many small groups in exploration of Italy. Smith is a popular instructor at OLLI's College for Seniors.

Ron Manheimer Book Talk and Signing
Sunday, February 22, 3 pm

Ron Manheimer
Dr. Ronald Manheimer, author of

A Map to the End of Time, is celebrating the publication of his new book Mirrors of the Mind:Reflecting on Philosophers' Autobiographies. Ron will hold a book talk and sign copies of his new work at the Reuter Center on SundayFebruary 22,

3 pm. Here's what author Harry R. Moody (The Five Stages of the Soul) says about Ron's book: "Imagine you could sit down and talk personally with the greatest philosophers of all time. Imagine having coffee with Augustine or Rousseau or Kierkegaard. Ever had a fantasy about chatting with Sartre and de Beauvoir in a Paris cafe? Well, read the chapters in Ronald Manheimer's book, and you will have the 'feel' of being in the presence of these and other thinkers. This is a one-of-kind book in which masterful scholarship is concealed behind a delightfully readable text. It can be recommended both to those with an academic grasp of philosophy and those coming to the great philosophers for the first time. The book is irresistible and not to be missed."

Copies of the book can be ordered through the website, JorvikPress.com.
