Meditation SIG Meeting
Monday, February 9, 201 4:15 pm
Reuter Center in Room 102B

John Muecke
John Muecke will lead our meditation on Monday. John holds an MA in religious studies from Stanford University, a BA from the University of Tennessee and continues studies in the open and esoteric teachings as preserved in the Tibetan Buddhist monastic tradition.  His courses at UNC Asheville's OLLI are typically taught directly from classical root scriptures and commentaries with attention to presenting the ideas accurately and preserving their benefit for our future generations.

The meditation style will be classical Buddhist meditation, briefly introduced by a description of its method, benefits, and purpose. John has asked that we each bring our favorite pillow as we will be sitting on the floor for this meditation.  If medical reasons prohibit sitting on the floor, sitting in a chair in an option.

One of the goals of this SIG is to explore a variety of meditation styles and this is our first time deferring from Jacquie Wollins' Functional Meditation style, which we will return to on February 23. We welcome all who have an interest in exploring the world of meditation.

The country is drawing in more investment, working on global issues ranging from climate change to peacekeeping, and even hosting the 2016 Olympics. But some of Brazil's trickiest problems - deep divisions over how to tackle serious income inequality, weak civic institutions and poor regional leadership - have held it back.  Join us to understand more about Brazil's past, present, and future.

AN  OPPORTUNITY  TO  LEARN  MORE  ABOUT  HEARING  LOOPS!
Monday, February 16, 7 pm
Manheimer Room
Juliette Sterkens
Dr. Juliette Sterkens, Wisconsin audiologist and national speaker, representing the Hearing Loss Association of America to promote the installation and use of hearing loops, will be paying Asheville a return visit on MondayFebruary 16, 7 pm,
in the Reuter Center's Manheimer Room. This presentation and loop demonstration are free and open to the public.

Hearing loops enable access by people with hearing loss to amplified sound in all sorts of settings. There are two hearing loops at the Reuter Center, in Room 102 and Room 206.  From the users' point of view they are the best and easiest of assistive listening devices. The Hearing Loss Association of America would like to see hearing loops installed in more Asheville venues.

If you wear hearing aids, in a looped setting you should be able to access amplified sound via the loop at the touch of a button or switch. That's because most hearing aids have a t-coil. If you aren't sure, you should check with your hearing aid provider. Some require activation.

Thursday, February 19,  3 pm
Reuter Center Room 206

Assistance will be provided for anyone wishing to complete a legally valid advance directive, including the notarization required in North Carolina, using N.C. Short form.

Special Thanks!
