Alexander Book Talk
Tuesday, February 3, 11:30 am
Did you attend high school in the 1950s, '60s or '70s?
The Fall of Summer, a novel by OLLI member Ted M. Alexander, is a leap back in time, a coming-of-age thriller laced with a touch of tabloid sizzle. In small-town America, murder intrudes, but sex binds.

In a heartbreaking and humorous testament to the enduring power of friendship and youth,
The Fall of Summer is a bittersweet glance back to a simpler time, when the Beatles had just hit American shores, the Yankees couldn't lose a pennant, and life's promise was still within reach.
Join author Ted M. Alexander on
Tuesday, February 3, 11:30 am in the Manheimer Room for a reading/signing of the book that former HarperCollins editor Gabe Robinson calls, "A fantastic story that transcends time while also managing to so beautifully evoke days gone by."  This event is free and open to the public.

Dear OLLI Members,
Our weekly newsletter is filled with the wealth of events organized by our members and community partners. This week you can enjoy a musical performance by members of the faculty of Brevard Music Center and attend a reading and book signing by one of our talented members, Ted Alexander. You can learn more about the changing dynamics in the Middle East during a World Affairs Council lecture or see a performance of scenes from Shakespeare's plays by the Montford Park Players. You can understand the challenges of transporting humans to Mars with the Astronomy Club of Asheville, and on Friday can learn more about the early history of abolition and the current challenges of creating a diverse and inclusive community at UNC Asheville at some of our planned Black History Month events. You can discuss investments with the Financial Strategies in Retirement SIG or taxes with The Forum. You can finish the day with an understanding of various energy sources with a film and discussion led by CFS instructor Richard Wiener.  All of this happens in addition to the rich curriculum of our College for Seniors winter classes.  Don't forget to take a look at the "Sneak Peek" of Spring 2015 courses.

Of course all of this activity happens in part because so many of our members volunteer their time and talent. You can lend a hand by volunteering at the winter member social or by reviewing the list of courses sought by the curriculum committee to see if there is something that you could teach or persuade someone to teach.

Thank you for all that you do to make OLLI a success, full of varied and challenging programs

 Syria's Refugee Crisis
by Nora Nassri of the University of South Carolina

Nora Nassri
Syrians have for a century welcomed over a million refugees from Armenia, Palestine, Iraq and other countries around the region. Now, thanks to a multi-year civil war, they are on track to become the source of the world's largest refugee population in a matter of months. As Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey and other neighbors strive to accommodate millions of Syrians, the risk of allowing Syrians to become dependent on emergency aid and forming a "lost generation" remains. Ultimately, though, the safety of displaced Syrians rests with the whole international community.

Admission to World Affairs Council meetings is $10 at the door, $8 for OLLI members, students get in free.

Deb Mears
'When teaching our seniors, I use the "armed forces" approach: I tell them what I'm going to tell them; I tell them; I tell them what I've told them. And because I teach skill courses, I SHOW them, then I give them written instructions. Inevitably, after all that, they do it their way! I love the confidence that says, "At my age, I'll do it MY way!'

AN  OPPORTUNITY  TO  LEARN  MORE  ABOUT  HEARING  LOOPS!

Juliette Sterkens
Dr. Juliette Sterkens, Wisconsin audiologist and national speaker, representing the Hearing Loss Association of America to promote the installation and use of hearing loops, will be paying Asheville a return visit on MondayFebruary 16, 7 pm,
in the Manheimer Room. This presentation and loop demonstration is free and open to the public.

Hearing loops enable access by people with hearing loss to amplified sound in all sorts of settings. There are two loops at the Reuter Center, in Room 102 and Room 206.  From the users' point of view they are the best and easiest of assistive listening devices. The Hearing Loss Association of America would like to see hearing loops installed in more Asheville venues.

If you wear hearing aids, in a looped setting you should be able to access amplified sound via the loop at the touch of a button or switch. That's because most hearing aids have a t-coil. If you aren't sure, you should check with your hearing aid provider. Some require activation.
