Dear OLLI Members,
In the words of Oprah Winfrey, "Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right." Here at OLLI we look forward to continuing all of the things we do so well together and to making changes that will help us to improve the things that will make our organization even more rewarding and efficient. If you are a new OLLI member or want to find out how to make the most of your OLLI experience, we invite you to attend the New Member Welcome this Friday, January 9, 10 am in the Manheimer Room.
This is a time for making resolutions. Online you can find lots of resolutions specifically for older adults. Many of them are the same ones we all make: Get more exercise. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Get more sleep. Some are designed specifically to promote successful aging: Talk about difficult issues like advance care planning (and we will have a workshop in February that can help you fulfill that goal). Take measures to prevent falls. Exercise your brain. My favorite, however, is "Be happy," the advice of the Kendal Corporation of Northern Ohio that operates continuing care retirement communities. The author of the blog post notes that happy people take care of themselves, they tend to live longer, and they have more fun. It's not at all scientific, but it's so much more positive than most of those goals we make and let fall by the wayside most of the year. And of course, OLLI promotes many different ideas of happiness. We look forward to starting another year together, as a community of teachers and learners and happy people. We may not always get everything right, but we should happily work together to figure out ways to make the most of these years of our lives.
Thank you for all that you do to model creative retirement, Catherine Frank Executive Director

January 16, 2015 CT, MRI, US - Which Exam is Right for You? by Dr. Bryon Dickerson. In the ever-changing healthcare environment of higher and higher insurance deductibles, the onus to contain costs is now on the healthcare consumer (patients) . It is becoming increasingly more important that physicians and patients make well-informed decisions about use of these health care dollars. Careful evaluation of imaging exam appropriateness not only helps cut costs, but improves quality of care for the patient. Dr. Bryon Dickerson is president and CEO of Asheville Radiology Associates and has been with the practice since 2002. This presentation is part of the Health Education Series.
