  • Class schedules were mailed on Friday, December 12, 2014.
  • After you receive your schedule, you may add additional courses without cost.
  • Add / drop begins tomorrow, Monday, December 15, 2014 and you may add all the courses you can schedule without any additional costs (other than the $20 fee added for some movement courses).
  • Courses may be added until just prior to the start of the second class period in a course.
If you cannot attend a course that you enrolled in, please work with office staff to drop the course so someone else may attend. It's frustrating for all of us to see empty seats in classes with wait lists.

Dear OLLI Members,
We are very proud of the many community partners who provide programming for our members and bring the entire Asheville community to the Reuter Center and the UNC Asheville campus.  We hope you will take some time to read the story in today's newsletter by John Hammond and Jim Lenburg about a leader for one of those partners, George Peery, chair of the Western North Carolina World Affairs Council.

If you have registered for College for Seniors courses, we hope that you received your schedules for winter term. If you are expecting a schedule and haven't received it, please call the office after 8 am tomorrow, Monday, December 15.  While many classes have filled, there are always openings in exciting courses taught by thoughtful and talented instructors.

If for any reason you are unable to attend classes, please contact the OLLI office to drop.  Many courses have wait lists, and we want to make sure that people who can and wish to attend regularly have the opportunity.

Please remember that we will be closing for the winter holidays this Friday, December 19, 5 pm.  We won't re-open until Monday, January 5 at 8 am, so please make sure that you do as much as possible to set your winter schedule before we break.  The start of College for Seniors Winter courses is Monday, January 12, 2015, and it will be here before we know it.

We will have an abbreviated newsletter next week and will take a break until January 4.

Thank you for all that you do to model creative retirement

An Affair With The World
George Peery - Chair, World Affairs Council
George Peery

By John Hammond
and Jim Lenburg

George Peery is chair of the World Affairs Council (WAC), one of OLLI's community partners. In this dynamic role he is passionate about discussing world affairs, exchanging ideas, and interacting with others to "raise the consciousness of the community regarding global affairs and international issues."

Growing up in western Virginia with ancestral roots tracing as far back to the mid-eighteenth century, it was certain that George would have a broad and interesting upbringing. His family had roots in both the political and religious (Presbyterian missionary) fields of endeavor. With this background, it is not a great stretch to discover that George chose to enter the academic profession within the discipline of political science, thereby combining some aspects from each of his forbearers. It is also interesting to note that George's grandfather was a former Democratic governor of Virginia and a part of the legendary "Byrd Machine of Virginia" in the 1930s.

After completing his primary and secondary education in Virginia, George received his Masters Degree from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and his PhD from Emory. He was a member of the political science faculty at Mars Hill College for over thirty years and has been active with the World Affairs Council throughout that time, serving in the chairperson's role since 2010.

It is noteworthy to mention that the World Affairs Council is one of the interesting and intriguing OLLI community partners; the group meets regularly at the Reuter Center and offers topical programming pertaining to current international issues. There are approximately 100 active members of the Council and there are over 400 individuals listed in the council's database. Not surprisingly, there is a good deal of cross-over among OLLI members and WAC members and attendees which is to be expected, since there is a good deal of synergy between many of the courses offered at OLLI's College for Seniors program and the programming featured at the World Affairs Council. Of immediate interest to OLLI Members are upcoming WAC programs in December, 2014 "Peacekeeping in Africa" and the Great Decision Series (weekly events in February and March where the Council will join many other chapters across the nation to discuss Foreign Policy Association topics) with presentations covering diverse topics such as trade, outsourcing, human rights, and developing nations.

Monthly topics and weekly forums are determined by the council's board of directors, which includes many former foreign service officers and others with a wide international background. The council is physically housed in UNC Asheville's Department of Political Science and its programming is presented regularly at OLLI's Reuter Center on Tuesday evenings. Everyone is encouraged to check out the OLLI calendar for an upcoming session of the World Affairs Council. It is likely you will find a topic of interest to you and one that may mark the beginning or the continuation of your own affair with the world.
