New Developments in
Climate Change
IPCC's 5th Assessment Report
by Dr. Lenny Bernstein
Monday,
November 17,
4:30 pm
Reuter Center, Room 206
Several reports issued in the past year have enriched our understanding of climate change. The broadest was the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) Fifth Assessment Report, which reviewed our knowledge of the science of climate change, its impacts, and opportunities for adaptation to and mitigation of those impacts. The 2014 US National Climate Change assessment presented a detailed picture of how climate change is already affecting the U.S. and projected increased impacts in the future.
Come to enjoy this unique opportunity to hear from an OLLI member on the front lines of this important global issue.

Leadership Asheville Forum Luncheon
Wednesday, November 19,
11:45 am lunch, 12:15 pm program
Country Club of Asheville
170 Windsor Road
The Asheville Symphony is using a $610,000 gift to fund music education at Hall Fletcher Elementary, one of Asheville's most innovative primary schools. The program, called "Music Works!," is patterned after El Sistema, a style of education that began 38 years ago in Venezuela to reach that country's most underserved and vulnerable children.
The goal of the program is to teach more than just music. It's aimed at helping kids improve their academic achievement, learn personal responsibility, and develop teamwork. It's the latest innovation at a school which has achieved remarkable results, though a majority of its pupils qualify for free or reduced price lunches.
At the Nov. 19, 2014 Leadership Asheville Forum Critical Issues Luncheon, we'll hear more from the Symphony's Executive Director, David Whitehill, Hall Fletcher Principal Dr. Gordon Grant and Music Works! Program Director Brian Kellum. We hope you will join us.
COST: $18 for LAF members,
$22 for nonmembers
RESERVATIONS REQUIRED.
Contact Nancy Williams atnwilliam@unca.edu or 250-2353 (email preferred). NOTE: The Country Club of Asheville has a firm no denim policy.

Dear OLLI Members,
We had a great opportunity this past Friday and Saturday to witness the artistic talents of our OLLI community. Please see the list below of all the people who made the Art Bazaar possible.
This week our Winter Catalog will be mailed and available on the website. Watch the newsletter for more information about registration on December 2.
Don't miss the Reuter Center Singers performance of music by Rogers and Hammerstein this afternoon (Sunday, November 16) at 4 pm. Donations are always happily accepted to support the work of this dynamic chorus. Remember that in addition to performances at OLLI, the group performs throughout the community, most recently at the Veterans Day celebration in Weaverville and as part of holiday celebrations at the Biltmore House. The group represents OLLI well and has a great time performing and learning new music.
If you are volunteering in the Asheville City Schools or interested in learning how you might be part of efforts to close the education achievement gap, plan to attend the Civic Engagement Committee's meeting this Wednesday, November 19, 4-5 pm at the Reuter Center.
We are truly lucky to be part of a talent and generous community! Catherine Frank Executive Director

The Social Function of Narrative
in Appalachian Society
by Charlotte Ross
Saturday, November 22, 2 pm
The stereotype of the Appalachian hillbilly has great power, prevalence, and persistence from the nineteenth century through the present. The Western North Carolina Historical Association has created an exhibition at the Asheville History Center/ Smith McDowell House (on view through December 31, 2014) titled "Hillbilly Land: Myth and Reality of Appalachian Culture" to explore the stereotypical images of the religion, music, arts and crafts, moonshine, and ignorance/backwardness of the region. This is part of a series of lectures to explore the subject. All lectures are open to the public, and a $5 donation is requested in support of the Center's exhibition and related programming. Members of the Western North Carolina Historical Association are admitted free. For more information call 828-253-9231 or email smh@wnchistory.org.

Tickets at the door $10
It's time for Tellabration! when thousands of people around the world gather in small towns and big cities to celebrate storytelling during the last week-end before Thanksgiving. The international celebration of storytelling, known as Tellabration! serves to build grassroots community support for the age-old art of storytelling. Since its inception in 1988, the annual observance has grown into one of the most impressive collective events in the history of the modern storytelling revival.
Citizens from Asheville and surrounding areas join the global Tellabration! Spirit for the seventeenth year.
The outstanding and diverse line-up showcases accomplished storytellers, headlined by Tennessee's own nationally known storyteller and author MINTON SPARKS. Fusing music, poetry, and her intoxicating gift for storytelling, this National Storytelling Festival veteran paints word pictures of the rural South that put you square in the middle of the people and the places she knows like the back of her hand. The line-up also includes outstanding Asheville Storytelling Circle tellers Pete Koschnick, Zane Chait, Daphne Darcy, and MC Karen-eve Bayne.
