Leadership Asheville Forum Luncheon

Wednesday, November 19, 2014

LAF  The Asheville Symphony is using a $610,000 gift to fund music education at Hall Fletcher Elementary, one of Asheville's most innovative primary schools.  The program, called "Music Works!," is patterned after El Sistema, a style of education begun 38 years ago in Venezuela to reach that country's most underserved and vulnerable children.

The goal of the program is to teach more than just music.  It's aimed at helping kids improve their academic achievement, learn personal responsibility and develop teamwork.  It's the latest innovation at a school which has achieved remarkable results, though a majority of its pupils qualify for free or reduced price lunches.

At the November 19 Leadership Asheville Forum Critical Issues Luncheon, we'll hear more from the Symphony's Executive Director, David Whitehill, Hall Fletcher Principal Dr. Gordon Grant and Music Works! Program Director Brian Kellum.  We hope you will join us.

Dear OLLI Members,
We have finished another fall session of College for Seniors courses. If you are already missing classes, be sure to click here to take a sneak peek at the many wonderful courses we will have on offer for the winter term. The Winter 2015 catalog will be mailed on November 18 and registration will take place on December 2.

Even though classes have ended for the term, there are many opportunities this week to learn at OLLI. Today Pan Harmonia will perform its annual "Elegy: Holocaust Remembrance" performance in the Manheimer Room.  On Tuesday our community partner The World Affairs Council of Western North Carolina will offer a lecture on Syria.

Next weekend you will be able to experience the talents of OLLI members in a couple of different ways.  On Friday and Saturday, begin your seasonal shopping at the OLLI Art Bazaar, where your fellow members will be displaying and selling their handiwork in a wide array of media.  And on Sunday, enjoy a performance of the music of Rogers and Hammerstein by the Reuter Center Singers.

Please watch your email next week for an opportunity to contribute to our Annual Fund.

Thank you for your many contributions to our community,

Catherine Frank

War Crimes Trials in an Uncertain World:
Justice for Syria

Tuesday, November 11, 7:30 pm
Manheimer Room

As October's World Affairs Council (WAC) lecture on the Scottish referendum was timely and pointed, November's event promises WAC-WNC members insight into another topical and important issue, namely the events in Syria and the conflicts raging there - particularly the developing refugee crisis and the rise of ISIS that raise human rights questions and conflicted issues of international response.

On Tuesday, November 11, Professor David Crane shares with us his perspectives on and concerns about Syria. Dr. Crane is the founding Chief Prosecutor of the Special Court for Sierra Leone (the chief prosecutor in the Charles Taylor trial) and Professor of Practice at the Syracuse University College of Law, The Institute for National Security and Counterterrorism, and The Maxwell School of Public Citizenship.  He is chair of the board of the Robert H. Jackson Center.

If you haven't already signed up for this year's membership (2014-2015), you may do so at this meeting.  Consult with Dave Hudleson at the door as you come in.  OLLI members are eligible for a discounted annual subscription fee.  UNC Asheville students are admitted without charge.  Single admissions for this lecture are $10 each.

Symphony Talk with Daniel Meyer
Friday, November 21, 3 pm
Manheimer Room, Free and open to the public.

The best way to enjoy the Asheville Symphony Orchestra's Masterworks concerts is to come to the Symphony Talk for the inside scoop on the music, composers, and soloists. Come early to get a seat; this popular series is very well attended.

Asheville Symphony Orchestra's music director and conductor Daniel Meyer will speak about the performance for the next evening's concert, and local music aficionado Chip Kaufmann will speak about the composers. At this Symphony Talk, Asheville Symphony Orchestra's own timpanist Todd Mueller and the Atlanta Symphony timpanist Mark Yancich will speak with Maestro Meyer about their upcoming performance of Oliverio's Dynasty Timpani Concerto. Daniel Meyer will also speak about Tchaikovsy's Symphony No. 4 and the work of living composer Barbara Higdon.

Folk Art Center - Blue Ridge Parkway
Sunday, November 23, 3 pm
Tickets at the door $10

It's time for Tellabration!, when thousands of people around the world gather in small towns and big cities to celebrate storytelling during the last week-end before Thanksgiving.  The international celebration of storytelling, known as Tellabration! serves to build grassroots community support for the age-old art of storytelling.  Since its inception in 1988, the annual observance has grown into one of the most impressive collective events in the history of the modern storytelling revival.

Citizens from Asheville and surrounding areas join the global Tellabration! Spirit for the seventeenth year, as Asheville Storytelling Circle hosts the local event Sunday, November 23, 3 pm at the Folk Art Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

The outstanding and diverse line-up once again showcases accomplished storytellers, headlined by  Tennessee's own nationally known storyteller and author Minton Sparks.  Fusing music, poetry, and her intoxicating gift for storytelling, this National Storytelling Festival veteran paints word pictures of the rural South that put you square in the middle of the people and the places she knows like the back of her hand.  The line-up also includes outstanding Asheville Storytelling Circle tellers Pete Koschnick, Zane Chait, Daphne Darcy, and MC Karen-eve Bayne.

General Admission: $10; proceeds help enable future storytelling events and activities in the WNC area.  Tickets are sold on a first-come, first-serve basis, and are available at the door on the day of the event.
