Dear OLLI Members,
We were glad to have our members back and enjoying a great line-up of College for Seniors courses, special events, and meetings by community partners this week. Many thanks to OLLI staff and volunteers who welcomed everyone and helped our fall term get off to a good start. We know that parking was challenging on some days and are meeting next week with UNC Asheville campus police to plan ways to minimize difficulties.

Evenings at the Cabaret Weimar "Why Weimar?" A lecture by Michael Brenner Tuesday, September 30, 7 pm Professor and scholar of Jewish history Michael Brenner will present "Why Weimar?" at 7 pm on Tuesday, September 30 in the Manheimer Room at the Reuter Center. Brenner will explore the dramatic explosion of long suppressed creativity from within Germany's small Jewish population that took place between the end of World War I and the rise of Hitler. Brenner's lecture kicks off the yearlong Evenings at the Cabaret Weimar series, exploring Germany's tumultuous experiment with democracy during the Weimar era. The period was marked by modernist innovations in the arts, theater, architecture, literature and science, and by a vibrant cabaret culture. Brenner is the Seymour and Lillian Abensohn Chair in Israel Studies and directs American University's Center for Israel Studies. He is also professor of Jewish history and culture at the Ludwig-Maximilians University of Munich, and has had visiting appointments at numerous universities. His many books include The Renaissance of Jewish Culture in Weimar Germany (Yale University Press, 1998), and a volume he co-edited with Gideon Reuveni, Emancipation through Muscles: Jews and Sports in Europe (University of Nebraska Press, 2006). Mi Historia Exhibit at UNC Asheville
 |
UNC Asheville student and CDE intern, Maria Lomeli-Garcia, admires the newly updated and installed Mi Historia exhibit at the Intercultural Gallery.
|
In 2003, Laura Simmelink, at the time a student at UNC Asheville, noted that the Center for Diversity Education traveled a number of exhibits but none focused on the growing presence of the Latino community in WNC. As these exhibits were traveling throughout the schools, she offered to fill in this gap as part of her course work at UNC Asheville. Using her connections at the Literacy Council and an Undergraduate Research Award, Simmelink set out to conduct interviews with Latinos and allies of the Latino community to tell a story of resilience, creativity, and solidarity. The result was the exhibit Mi Historia: Latinos in WNC which debuted in 2004. For the past ten years it has been viewed by thousands of students, teachers, and community members across WNC. Plan to visit the exhibit and to learn more, click here to visit the Center for Diversity Education.

Fall in the North Carolina mountains is an experience visitors return to again and again in order to enjoy the Blue Ridge Mountains fall foliage.
Hundreds of miles of scenic byways and back country r oads wind through the region, with overlooks and turnouts that offer breath-taking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains decked out in their finest fall colors.
Featured below are five beautiful drives to take to enjoy our region's fall beauty. Learn more and start planning your fall foliage adventure today!
Great Smoky Mountains National Park - The GSMNP, with a gateway in Cherokee, North Carolina, is the most visited National Park in America. Covering more than half a million acres in Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee, the Park offers leaf lookers a wonderful scenic drive on US Highway 441/Newfound Gap Road, which traverses nearly 33 miles across the width of the park to Gatlinburg, TN.
Blue Ridge Parkway - Known as "America's Favorite Drive," the Blue Ridge Parkway covers 469 miles as it connects the Great Smoky mountains National Park to the Shenandoah National Park. Along the way, the Parkway offers stunning views and vistas of the Blue Ridge mountain's fall color. Enjoy the view, but drive safely!
Chimney Rock State Park - From atop Chimney Rock, an ancient monolith soaring 1,200 feet above the valley floor, on a clear day visitors can see for more than 75 miles across Lake Lure, the Blue Ridge mountains and the Carolina piedmont. Travelers can visit Chimney Rock by taking US Highway 64/74 from Rutherfordton and Hendersonville, or NC 9 from Black Mountain, and along the way enjoy a beautiful, scenic mountain drive.
Grandfather Mountain - Grandfather Mountain, near Linville, North Carolina, is famous for its "Mile High Swinging Bridge," panoramic vistas, wildlife, and superb alpine hiking. But the iconic mountain is also a prime location for visitors to view the breathtaking color in the area. Travel on Highway 221 towards Linville, NC and find out just how pretty the mountain can be!
Fontana Dam - Located in the far western corner of North Carolina, Fontana Dam is the tallest dam east of the Rockies. Surrounded by the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Nantahala National Forest, and deep river gorges, Fontana ranks among the most beautiful dams in the world. From the east, take Hwy 74 (Great Smoky Mountain Expressway) eight miles past Bryson City, then turn right on NC Hwy 28. Continue on Hwy 28 for 25 miles.
