Hearing. . . . but not understanding. Is it your problem?
Microphones boost the sound level, but they don't aid in comprehension, because a room still has echoes and reverberations. Hearing loops are designed to improve comprehension and clarity of sound.
Last fall, OLLI installed a hearing loop in the Manheimer Room (102), the large lecture room at the Reuter Center. Have you tried it yet? A hearing loop links wirelessly to the telecoil (T-coil) in your hearing aid (most have them). If you are unsure whether or not you have a T-coil, or don't know how to access it, now is the time to see your audiologist or other provider!
If you don't have a hearing aid, but want improved comprehension, check out one of the headsets from the OLLI office. You should have greater clarity of sound no matter where you sit in the room.
We hope to be able to install a hearing loop in Room 206 between the fall and winter College for Seniors terms. Now is the time to check that telecoil so that you will be ready for a second space where OLLI will offer technology to meet the needs of those with hearing loss!

Dear OLLI Members,
We are looking forward to New Member Welcome at 10 am on Friday, September 12 in the Manheimer Room. We especially invite people who are new to our program, but we also want to make sure that everyone knows how to make the most of the many opportunities our programs offer. We are member-driven and member-led, so we rely on you to be part of the team that builds the curriculum, envisions the strategic plan, plans the lecture series and offers input on every facet of what we do. Members of the OLLI Steering Council and the College for Seniors Committee will be available to answer questions but also to talk about how you might be more involved in making things work here at the Reuter Center. We know that the Asheville area offers many opportunities to learn; OLLI at UNC Asheville offers a unique opportunity to be part of a community of teachers and learners.
We will send out schedules tomorrow, Monday, September 8, late in the afternoon, to everyone who has registered for Fall 2014 College for Seniors courses. These schedules will reflect any changes participants have made during the add/drop period. The deadline for dropping courses for a full refund is Friday, September 12 at 3 pm. If you find a course is not to your taste or you cannot attend for any reason, please be sure to stop by the office to drop the course formally. Over half of our courses are full, so there are always people who would like to have your seat.
We are very proud of the work that all of us do together to provide opportunities to thrive in life's second half,
Catherine Frank
Executive Director

Asheville City Schools Need YOU!
Shaping the Next Generation of Lifelong Learners
Opportunities for Classroom Assistants, Tutors, and Mentors in Asheville City Schools
Come to our kick-off event on
Monday, September 15, 4:15 pm
in the Manheimer Room. Light refreshments will be served.
Comments from Vinod Jindal, an OLLI Volunteer, regarding his mentorship at Asheville Middle School:
"I mentored two twelve year-old students last spring, one from Russia and another from Australia. They had both had been in this country for a couple of years but were having problems adjusting and making friends, and were very eager to have a mentor. Full of energy, they were excellent company to each other and got along very well. The three of us went outside to the playground when the weather was good. They loved to play computer games against each other in the media room with me watching them. At the end of the school year I could see they were coming out of their shells and were more confident. I enjoyed my experience with them and look forward to being their mentor or to mentoring someone else next year."

 Wireless Access at OLLI
We are happy to announce that significant improvements have been made to UNC Asheville's campus wireless environment. The former "guest" network has been replaced with a new system that allows for easier, more manageable connections. You will find a more consistent user experience across all major computing platforms (laptops, tablets, and phones) and a one-time setup that is valid for one year.
To connect, you will need to pick up a voucher code and set-up instructions from the OLLI office for each device you wish to connect to the wireless. You'll need to make the initial connect on campus; this cannot be done from home. Here's a link to the set up instructions.
If you have trouble connecting to the wireless network, you are invited to visit the ITS Service Desk (located in the Ramsey Library behind the reference desk).
