We want to thank Marge Campbell, Jacob Cohen, Linda Cohen, Bob Davis, Barbara Jaslow, Margaret Schleifer, Gail Sobel, Kathy Tempelaar-Lietz, and Ann Ward for doing our data entry for fall schedules and Cleone Black, Linda Fox, Nancy Kinder, Sonja Nielsen, Kim Rodine, Rosemary Walton, and Gracemarie Warren for their work to verify schedules.

 Wireless Access at OLLI
We are happy to announce that significant improvements have been made to our campus' wireless environment. The former "guest" network is in a new form with easier, more manageable connections. You will find a more consistent user experience across all major computing platforms (laptops, tablets, and phones) and a one-time setup that is valid for one year.
To connect, you will need to pick up a voucher code and set up instructions from the OLLI office for each device you wish to connect to the wireless. You'll need to do the initial connect on campus - this cannot be done from home. Here's a link to the set up instructions. If you have trouble connecting to the wireless network please visit the ITS Service Desk (located in the Ramsey Library behind the reference desk).

SIG Financial Strategies in Retirement Meeting
Skip Helms
of Helms Wealth Management, LLC
will be the featured speaker for the
Financial Strategies in Retirement SIG meeting on
Friday, September 5, 1:30 pm
Mr. Helms is a 29-year veteran of the financial services business.
He will be talking about using several technical analysis strategies to research investments. These are disciplines not usually used to manage personal investment accounts and offer a more penetrating view of individual securities and markets relative to the larger universe of choices. Many investors can use these practical tools to stress-test their current approach. This session will be geared towards investors who want a better understanding of what they own and why they own it.
Contact Kate Beatty, kkbmom@yahoo.com for additional information. Check posted daily schedule for room number.

INTERDISCIPLINARY STEM SEMINAR SERIES
(Science Technology Engineering Mathematics)

New Developments in
Ground-Based Astronomy
Dr. Brian Dennison,
UNC Asheville Physics Department
Thursday, September 4,
4:30-6 pm
Reuter Center, Manheimer Room
Ground-based astronomy generally consists of optical and radio astronomy, which mostly operate in those parts of the electromagnetic spectrum to which the atmosphere is characteristically transparent. This field is on the cusp of a sea change, not unlike the changes that engulfed experimental particle physics over the past forty years.
The big questions looming at the frontiers of our knowledge of the universe require new telescopes with extraordinary sensitivities. Thus, the unmistakable trend is toward fewer, larger telescopes incorporating the latest technology.
Mark your calendar to attend this fascinating presentation and learn more about the field of ground-based astronomy.

Asheville City Schools Need YOU!
Shaping the Next Generation of Lifelong Learners
Opportunities for Classroom Assistants, Tutors, and Mentors in Asheville City Schools
Come to our kick-off event
Monday, September 15, 4:15 pm
Reuter Center Manheimer Room,
light refreshments will be served.
Testimonial from 2013 volunteer, Kathy Rouse, "The greatest reward for me when working in a fifth grade classroom at Ira B. Jones last year was sharing books with the students. They welcomed me each time I came to their classroom just because we were going to read together and share what made us laugh and new things we learned. I was even told by the teacher that one of these students had never wanted to read with anyone before our time together. Being able to take that time to encourage a child to enjoy and feel good about the ability to read aloud was a real gift to me and their smiles revealed their pleasure as well. It was an experience I will always treasure."
