Dear OLLI Members,
We will be sending out a separate email tomorrow with all of the details for making the most of registration, so please look for that in the late afternoon.

We wanted to let you know that the university has installed a new encrypted wireless network in the Reuter Center for the use of our members who want online access for their laptops, tablets, and phones. The new network will allow our members to register each device once to enjoy an entire year of access, without having to log on every time. The network will help avoid the "timing out" issues that have been frustrating for members and will offer greater security.  We only learned about the new network this Tuesday, so we have not had time to work out the logistics for the best way to handle the volume of registrations or to manage any difficulties.  We are working on those details now and hope to have things up and running in the next two weeks, although our main focus will be fall registration.  Because the new system has already been installed, you will not be able to log in using the old guest user name and password.  But by the time fall classes roll around, we should have a workable system in place. Please watch this newsletter and special announcements for more details. We recognize that there will be some initial inconvenience but know that in the long run this system marks a real improvement for our members.

Please check out the many opportunities to volunteer inside and outside OLLI.  We need class reps for the College for Seniors and volunteers to call our new members and welcome them to the New Member Welcome. OLLI members may be part of the county-wide "Day of Caring" by volunteering to work at Manna Food Bank. If you want to explore all of your opportunities to be involved in the life of Asheville and Buncombe County, enroll in Leadership Asheville Seniors.

We are very proud of the work that all of us do together to provide opportunities to thrive in life's second half,

Catherine Frank
Executive Director

Don't forget! Volunteer to be a class rep for your fall College for Seniors course

Fall registration begins Wednesday, August 13, and we want to remind you to sign up to be a Class Rep. Class Reps act as valuable assistants to the instructors in class and ensure that the class runs smoothly. This is a job that's simple to do, takes very little time, but contributes to the community feeling of our classrooms.  Check the Class Rep box in the CFS section on the fall registration form to volunteer.

JOIN THE CONVERSATION
Leadership Asheville Seniors
Wednesday, September 10 - November 5, 2014

This fall, Leadership Asheville for Seniors (LAS) has lined up an impressive array of Asheville area leaders representing all facets of the community from government and the economy to education and the arts.

Speakers currently on the schedule include Ester Manheimer, Mayor of Asheville, David Gantt, Buncombe County Commissioner, Tony Baldwin, Buncombe County Superintendent, Karen Cragnolin, Director of RiverLink, and many more!

Leadership Asheville Seniors is a series of day-long seminars (8:30 am - 3:30 pm) held at various sites in Buncombe County. Each of the sessions in the nine-week program acquaints you with the area's history, people, institutions, and challenges by providing opportunities to meet with community leaders, activists, and politicians. One of the main goals of the program is to open the door to civic engagement and volunteering for participants eager to bring a lifetime of experience to improve their community.

The first session of 2014 happens September 10th, and we still have openings available.

If you or someone you know is interested in joining in the conversation, please contact Laurel Jernigan at 828-250-3871 or ljerniga@unca.edu.  Click here for more information.
