Fran Ross is offering sessions on four Tuesday mornings, August 5, 12, 19, and 26, 10-11 am at the Reuter Center so that OLLI members can try out Groove. Take advantage of this no-cost, short-term commitment, limited to twenty people - anyone from the community can attend.

Dear OLLI Members,
Thanks to everyone who turned out this past week to make our group photo shoot a success!  Click here to visit our Facebook page to see the "aerial technology" we used to capture the OLLI spirit. Thanks to Matt Mengel for sending this photo our way.

Today (Sunday, June 29), take advantage of the unique opportunity to learn more about tapping into your creativity from Nick Kepley, MOTION Dance Theatre's artistic director.  This event is free and open to the public.

We know you will enjoy reading Kirk Borland's story in this newsletter about OLLI member Anne Sayers and her experience with the Paths to Creative Retirement workshop. Anne's story is another reminder of the many ways that our various programs help people "put the pieces together" to find fulfillment in a new phase of their lives.

Finally, please remember that the Reuter Center and the OLLI office will be closed this Friday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day.

Enjoy the week,
Catherine Frank
Executive Director

Anne Sayers: Finding A Space Of Her Own

By Kirk Borland

On a Sunday morning during the closing hours of the Spring 2013 Paths to Creative Retirement (Paths) Weekend sponsored by OLLI at UNC Asheville (OLLI), participant Anne Sayers surprised herself (and many who know her) when she announced her decision to rent a house in Asheville to "test out" a permanent move from Raleigh. Anne, a North Carolina native who had lived most of her life in the central part of the state, had signed up for the popular Life Transitions Program at the suggestion of a friend.

And while she admits her hope was to engage in some reflection and discussion that would yield ideas as to how to make her recent retirement more meaningful, she did not come with any conscious intention of moving to Asheville.

On reflection, however, Anne would later realize that all the pieces were there waiting to be assembled during a weekend that she would later describe as "life changing."

Caption Call

Do you have a hard time hearing on the phone? You may be interested in a CaptionCall phone. This phone helps people with hearing loss to use the phone with confidence with friends and family. It uses a regular phone line combined with high-speed internet to caption the voice of the person on the other end of the line so you can read along as they speak, similar to closed captioning on your television. CaptionCall is made available free to all qualified users as a fulfillment of the Americans with Disabilities Ace (ADA). You will need a professional certification of hearing loss to obtain the free phone, including installation. For further information, contact Alex Bardsley at CaptionCall Centralized Scheduling. Email, [email protected], or call either (855)405-6313 or (801)293-6583.
Thanks so much to OLLI member John Carpenter for bringing this to our attention.
