Dear OLLI Members,
Mark your calendar for our Advance Care Planning workshop on Thursday, June 19, 7 pm (and see further details in this newsletter). This is free and open to the public.
We look forward to having College for Seniors Summer 2014 courses start again tomorrow, Monday, June 16. We have had a number of new members join for the summer term, so please take extra care to greet your fellow OLLI members, new or returning. Our community of teachers and learners works best when we all share our passion for learning and create an inviting and welcoming environment.
Indeed when any member of our community passes away, we feel the loss. I want to take special notice of the loss of George Stuart. George was known here at OLLI for his stimulating College for Seniors courses on the Maya. He had held many positions with National Geographic, including Vice President for Research and Exploration, Senior Assistant Editor for Archaeology for National Geographic Magazine, and Chairman of the Committee for Research and Exploration. He wrote both popular and scholarly books on the Maya and archaeology. But George, like many of our accomplished members and teachers, wore all of those impressive achievements lightly. We remember him not only for his intellect but for his kind and gentle manner, for his ready wit, and for his generous spirit. George's wife Melinda (whose courses and lectures are also celebrated here at OLLI) kept all of us informed about George's health in his final months. Melinda said that the Maya would say that George "entered his road" at death. We certainly valued having him as our guide and companion on our journey here.
Grateful for the many ways our work together gives us a sense of perspective and insight, Catherine Frank Executive Director

Tutor One Child. Change Two Lives.
An exciting volunteer opportunity is coming up at the Literacy Council. From June 23--July 4 (July 4 is an optional review day), we are holding our annual Augustine Project tutor training. The Augustine Project is our tutoring program that works with children from low-income families who are reading, writing, or spelling below grade level. Since its inaugural year in 2005, this program has had a 100% success rate.
During the two-week training, volunteers will learn how to provide research-based reading instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, spelling & written expression. They will also learn about dyslexia and other learning differences.
After training, all tutors are matched with an elementary school or middle school student. They meet with their student at least twice per week for 50 minutes each session, for a total of at least 40 hours of instruction.
For information, contact Lily Contorer, Augustine Project Director, 828-254-3442 x202 lily@litcouncil.com
