Ocean Sustainability
A lecture by Dr Ed Hauser
Climate change, habitat destruction, ocean acidification, and overfishing severely impact the ability of our oceans to support coral reefs, kelp beds, and fisheries. The implications are enormous for both human and bird life. Learn about the environmental issues affecting the ocean biome and what will be needed to alter negative trends. Dr. Hauser is a retired professor emeritus from the university system in Ohio and a board member of Elisha Mitchell Audubon Society.

Dear OLLI Members,

Only one more week until the beginning of summer term courses!  We have been hard at work putting the final touches on the program for the 2014 Southern Regional Lifelong Learning Meeting to be held at the Reuter Center July 30 - August 1 (click here to view the conference website), and we are anxious to have our members teaching and learning in full force, beginning June 16.

We live in a city rich in learning and cultural opportunities.  The Western North Carolina Historical Association (WNCHA) has just opened at the Smith-McDowell House on the A-B Tech campus an exhibition tracing the stereotypes and realities of the Southern mountaineer (click here to learn more about the exhibit and the lectures and other events sponsored by WNCHA). Many of our favorite people, including Dr. Gordon McKinney, Dr. Erica Abrams-Locklear, and Dr. Dan Pierce have had a hand in putting the exhibit together.  Please read more in this newsletter and plan to spend time at the exhibit and in lectures absorbing the rich blend of photographs, objects, and texts, to learn more about this part of Appalachian history.

Another Appalachian tradition, storytelling, is an interest of OLLI members. "Stories on Asheville's Front Porch" will be holding a performance at the Reuter Center in August, and OLLI members are planning a trip at the end of June to Jonesborough, Tennessee, to hear story-teller Bill Harley (see the details in this newsletter).

You have probably already heard, but there is a rumor that President and Mrs. Obama are seriously considering purchasing a home in Asheville.  Think of the curriculum committee, civic engagement, and life transition possibilities of having a former POTUS and FLOTUS in our midst! Then again, wouldn't they be enriched by joining the company of all of the amazing people who share their time and talent with OLLI every day?

With gratitude,
Catherine Frank
Executive Director

Around the Center
On Friday, we gathered for a 'salad bar' lunch to thank registration volunteers for their hard work.  We couldn't keep the doors open without our wonderful volunteers.  Thanks again!

f/32 Photography Group Meeting
Wednesday, June 11, 7 pm

camera.jpg f/32 is a group of photographers who share an appreciation and love of photography. Members range from the young to the young at heart, from the amateur to the advanced, from those who just like to take pictures to the professional photographer. The members of f/32 use a wide range of equipment to produce images, including traditional film cameras, digital cameras, and flatbed scanners.

Each month we meet to share our work with each other and receive input from our peers, to see the work of other members, to learn new methods, techniques, and tricks of the trade, to hear about the latest industry news and equipment and to enjoy good old fashioned fellowship with other photographers.  Scheduled at the Reuter Center, this event is free and open to the public.
